Microsoft Windows 11

My new OMEN HP Gaming Laptop 16-wf0xxx takes about 10second to boot which is very slow compared to my old laptop that already 3 years aged and carrying 512GB x2 of SSD takes only 1 second to boot. The storage of my new OMEN is 164GB free of 476GB. Only having one 512GB SSD. I dont know if this is slow booting up is normal or not.

Hi @YC1machine,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

A new gaming laptop like your HP OMEN taking about 10 seconds to boot, compared to an older laptop that boots in about 1 second, can feel significantly slower, especially considering your expectations for new, high-performance hardware. However, several factors could contribute to the observed boot time, and it's important to analyze these to understand whether your OMEN's boot time is within a normal range or indicative of an issue. Here's a breakdown:

1. Comparison Factors

  • Hardware Differences: Your new OMEN and the older laptop might have different hardware configurations, affecting boot times. While both have SSDs, the specifics of the SSD (such as its read/write speeds and interface, e.g., NVMe vs. SATA) play a crucial role.
  • BIOS/UEFI Settings: The time it takes for the BIOS/UEFI to initialize hardware can vary between different models and settings. Fast Boot settings, if available and enabled, can significantly reduce boot time.
  • Operating System and Software: The version of the operating system, along with startup programs and drivers, can affect boot times. A fresh, minimal installation will generally boot faster than one with many auto-start applications and services.

2. Normal Boot Time Range

  • While SSD-equipped systems are known for their fast boot times, "normal" can vary. A boot time of around 10 seconds might not be unusual, depending on the factors above, especially when considering the entire boot process from power-on to reaching a usable state.

3. Troubleshooting and Improvements

  • Check Startup Programs: Use Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) under the Startup tab to disable unnecessary startup programs.
  • Update Drivers and BIOS: Ensure all drivers, especially storage controller drivers, and the laptop's BIOS/UEFI, are up to date.
  • SSD Health and Firmware: Check the health of your SSD through its software utility or tools like CrystalDiskInfo. Ensure its firmware is up to date.
  • Windows Fast Startup: Ensure Windows Fast Startup feature is enabled (found in Power Options under what the power buttons do).
  • Clean Boot: Perform a clean boot to see if any non-Microsoft services are causing delays.

4. When to Be Concerned

  • If, after optimizing, the boot time doesn't improve or the system shows other signs of issues (like frequent crashes, freezing, or sluggishness during operation), there might be a deeper problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
