I bought this laptop less than a week ago, and I've come to notice that there is a signifiant dip in performance in games when on battery vs when plugged in.
An example of this is when I'm plugged in and playing Overwatcch or Dota2 or any other games, the performance is amazing, and the average FPS can go upwards of 120-200 easily, but when I'm running on battery power, my laptop struggles to even browse the menus smoothly, and the FPS hovers around 30 in game.
I asked a couple of my friends if this was normal, and they said that it could be because my laptop is using the integrated Intel graphics when on battery, rather than my Nvidia GTX 1060 in order to save battery life.
I would rather sacrifice battery life but be able to play games smoothly on battery than risk damaging the battery by playing while plugged in for extended periods of time.
many online guides suggested going into the Nvidia control panel and setting the default GPU to the 1060, but there is no such option for me when I tried it. Trying to change the power settings also yielded no results. The Omen Control Center was of no help either, although I did try switching from default mode to performance mode, but it did not yield any results.
Am I missing something here, or is this an unavoidable issue with gaming laptops? Do I require some third party app to force the 1060 to be utilised when on battery?

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
I would be glad to help you with the issue you are facing today. I understand the difficulty with the problem.
I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:
Right-click your desktop background and select NVIDIA Control Panel. You can also find this tool by performing a Start menu (or Start screen) search for NVIDIA Control Panel or by right-clicking the NVIDIA icon in your system tray and selecting Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
To quickly set a system-wide preference, you could use the Adjust image settings with the preview option. For example, if you have old hardware that struggles to play the games you want to play, you may want to select “Use my preference emphasizing” and move the slider all the way to “Performance.” This trades graphics quality for an increased frame rate.
By default, the “Use the advanced 3D image settings” option is selected. You can select Manage 3D settings and change advanced settings for all programs on your computer or just for specific games. NVIDIA keeps a database of the optimal settings for various games, but you’re free to tweak individual settings here. Just mouse-over an option for an explanation of what it does.
If you have a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus technology — that is, both NVIDIA and Intel graphics — this is the same place you can choose which applications will use the NVIDIA hardware and which will use the Intel hardware.
