Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

My omen 16 won't start.  To make it work I have to unplug the battery from the motherboard, start using the power adaptor then plug the battery back in.  I get a message about the CMOS when I restart.  It will work for a day but then it stops working again.  I have

1. Updated all drivers

2. Updated the BIOS

3. Run a battery test and it came back as ok

Not sure where to go next.

Hi @Hamoflage,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue related to the motherboard or CMOS battery. Since you've already updated drivers, BIOS, and tested the main battery, there are a few additional troubleshooting steps you can try.

Check the CMOS Battery:

  • The CMOS battery might be failing or losing charge, causing the BIOS settings to reset and leading to startup issues.
  • If you're comfortable opening the laptop, try replacing the CMOS battery (typically a coin-cell battery) and see if that resolves the issue. You may also want to ensure the battery is properly seated.

Clear the CMOS:

  • You could try clearing the CMOS by resetting the BIOS settings to defaults. This is often done by shorting the CMOS reset pins or removing and reinserting the CMOS battery. Refer to your Omen 16 manual for detailed instructions on how to do this.

Re-seat Components:

  • Since you’ve been unplugging and plugging back in the battery, try re-seating the RAM and storage (SSD/HDD) to ensure there are no loose connections causing intermittent issues.

Test Without Battery:

  • Try running the laptop solely on AC power with the battery removed, just to rule out any potential issues with the battery connection or power management system.

System Diagnostics:

  • Run any built-in diagnostics provided by HP (such as HP PC Hardware Diagnostics). This can sometimes help identify underlying hardware issues that might not show up in regular tests.

Check for Power Delivery Issues:

  • If the problem persists only when plugged in, check the power adapter and charging port for any issues. A faulty adapter or power delivery system could cause intermittent problems with the battery charging and BIOS functionality.

Operating System Issue:

  • If everything seems fine with the hardware, consider a system restore to a point where the laptop worked well or even a clean Windows installation to rule out any operating system-related conflicts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
