@albertmwesiga, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing frustrating issues with your OMEN 16 touchpad. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the intermittent stopping, lagging, and the need to restart for it to work again:

1️⃣ Check Touchpad Settings

  • Press Win + I to open Settings.
  • Navigate to Devices > Touchpad.
  • Ensure the Touchpad toggle is turned ON.
  • Adjust the sensitivity settings if necessary.

2️⃣ Update/Reinstall Touchpad Drivers

  • Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  • Right-click on HID-compliant touchpad or Synaptics/ELAN Touchpad and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  • If the issue persists, right-click the driver again, select Uninstall device, and then restart your laptop.

3️⃣ Disable Power Saving for Touchpad

  • In Device Manager, right-click the Touchpad device and select Properties.
  • Go to the Power Management tab.
  • Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
  • Click OK and restart your laptop.

4️⃣ Check for Windows & HP Updates

  • Open HP Support Assistant and check for any driver or BIOS updates.
  • Run Windows Update by pressing Win + I, then go to Update & Security > Check for updates.

5️⃣ Disable USB Suspend Setting (If Using Precision Touchpad)

  • Open Control Panel and go to Power Options.
  • Click Change plan settings next to your active plan.
  • Click Change advanced power settings.
  • Expand USB settings and set USB selective suspend setting to Disabled.
  • Click Apply and OK.

6️⃣ Check for Hardware Issues

  • If the touchpad continues to freeze or lag, connect an external mouse to see if there's overall system lag.
  • Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics by pressing F2 during boot, then navigate to Component Tests > Touchpad.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
