OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck0000 (2Y4A9AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

Omen 17-ck0000 fan ALWAYS on, despite option turned off in Bios settings.

Omen gaming hub shows "auto" mode idling at 1800RPM, regardless of temperature.

Windows power options fan set to "passive"

Battery saving mode on,

Bios settings "fans always on" turned off.

Omen gaming hub, fan mode "auto", power mode "balanced", graphics switcher "hybrid"

Bios version F.30

Abysmal battery life as a result (1.5hrs with 3070 graphics card disabled, 1080p 60hz battery saver), but that's also a separate issue.

Currently using omen gaming hub to manually set the fan to lowest possible (1200rpm with curve), which is quiet enough. However still unable to completely turn off fan for battery use, which makes absolutely zero sense. HP has a supposed solution: https://support.hp.com/ee-en/document/c07914105

the proposed solution was posted in Oct 2021 to update bios to F.21, and as of now BOTH f.21 and the newer version F.30 still do not resolve the issue.

This is a new machine purchased less than 2 weeks ago, so "factory resetting it" or reinstall window isn't a part of the problem - this fan issue has existed since day 1.

Additionally, official HP support webpage displays no options for this laptop model, we're literally left to be stranded with no support (makes the 3 year care pack looks like a scam to be honest)

Hi there @Ub6424

Thanks for your reply.

1), 2) Updating the drivers you have specified did not fix the issue, fan still idles at 1800rpm.

3) is irrelevant, as the issue is not experiencing overheating during load but rather fan turned on at idle. I have turned system cooling policy to passive and fan remains idling at 1800rpm.

4) Notebookfancontrol does not have a profile suitable to omen 17-ck0000.  Although creating a profile from scratch would probably work, it requires a significant amount of work and in depth knowledge EC probing - most definitely not a consumer responsibility to tamper with a brand new machine when this is clearly a stock software issue by HP - the advertised 6 hours of battery life should not be achievable only through EC tampering. Alternatively, if HP engineers can provide us with a suitable nbfc xml config file, I'm more than happy to use it with nbfc.

(1) Play with <HP OMEN Notebook PC 15 / HP OMEN 5001NG> nbfc config file:

See:

Download:

In your case, there is a BIOS <> sensor <> FAN control problem. We cannot solve this. An HP technician should be able to say something about it and offer a BIOS update. That's all we can do now.

Good luck

Hi,

1) the nbfc config file does not apply to my model, but I've managed to create a semi-working one. "semi" because I can now control the fans to run at 600-700rpm instead of the default manual lowest 1200rpm, but any lower than that it appear to trigger a failsafe mechanism that the fans suddenly spin back up before gradually slowing down, and then repeats. I will email HP support to see if there's any updates (or solutions). If anyone has the same model as mine and wants to try probing the EC around, I have managed to find that cpu fan is 0x34, min 0C and max 2E, and gpu fan is 0x35, min 0A max 2C (which in decimal directly corresponds to rpm x 100). Omen gaming hub's "manual mode" and "auto mode" corresponds to 0x95, auto = 30 and manual = 40. 0xb1 is cpu fan's current rpm. I have NOT found gpu fan's current rpm, but speedfan program can handle that anyways, or how to go around the failsafe.

Anyhow, I guess it's up to HP for a firmware update.

Thanks for trying to help 🙂
