omen 17 w205nt
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I've recently bought an omen 17 w205nt gaming laptop coming with i7-7700 processor and Nvidia 1050 graphics card. My problem is due to overheating while playing Gears Of Wars 4. After 30 to 45 minutes white playing the game screen freezes at a point with unresponsive controls, and the fan noise returns to normal immediately. I am sure it's an overheating problem and I guess it's related to the graphics card core since I used the computer for vray rendering and had no problems at all. I can play Forza Horizon 4 during long hours on this computer and had no such problems at all...

I have a fresh Windows 10 installation and all my drivers are up-to-date. Also I had connected my laptop to my 4k tv while  the freezing happened, it persisted 3 times with 30 minutes intervals. I had no performance drops and not encountered any throttling. Ambient temp was about 25 degree Celcius.

I don't use any HP related control software (I am totally stranger to HP tools and apps), so any help and recommendation is appreciated about fan control or power management software, thanks in advance...

Hello @advent06

First off, 4K requires a lot of video card. You need a 1070-1080 for such a load. You are working your little 1050 too hard and most likely why the crashing even at low settings. The recommended specs show a 1060 just for 1080p.

It would still be a good idea to check your systems temperatures during gaming anyway to make sure its running good during those times. HWMonitor is a good one that will give you both the cpu and gpu temps. It will give you the current core temps Value, the Minimum and the Maximum numbers hit.The Ambient room temp you say was 25C which is good.

You can also check to see if there are other processes running in the background during the game in the Windows Task Manager that are using a lot of resources. Alt Ctrl Del to access the Task Manager.

That's about all I can offer for suggestions. Hope it helps.

Thank you for replying and the links, I am going to monitor my system temps and see wether or not this is a game specific issue... By the way  I am running the games at 1080p and mostly stable at 60 fps, as you also mentioned that 1050 is quite inadequate for 4k gaming... Maybe downscaling from 4k to 1080p is an issue?

Im afraid all I could do is guess.

If your Windows graphics output is set to 1080, then you should be good.
