OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck1000 (509V8AV)

My OMEN is working fine except for four individual LEDS have switched color from white to orange. The first key went to orange about a week ago and three more have chaged in the last few days. The keys are the Calculator, PRT SC, PG DN and arrow right. No warning or error messages. My two year warranty expired in April so I am on my own. The Omen program that controls the keyboard will not change the color regardless of the command when the other keys are white.  Other color commands like red override the orange but I think the indivdual LEDs has failed but all the same color within a few weeks, possibly indicates something else. The keys work fine and I could make them all orange but that does not solve the problem.  All software and firware are current. Looking for some help or advice. Ed19472

Hi @Ed19472,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with the LED colors on your OMEN gaming laptop's keyboard. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the problem.

Check OMEN Command Center Settings:

  • Ensure that the OMEN Command Center software is up-to-date. Sometimes, updating the software can resolve minor glitches.
  • Verify that the keyboard lighting settings in OMEN Command Center are correctly configured. Try resetting to default settings and then reconfiguring your preferred colors.

Update Keyboard Firmware (if applicable):

  • Sometimes, keyboard firmware updates can fix issues related to LED malfunctioning. Check HP's support website for any available firmware updates specifically for your laptop model.

Perform a Power Reset:

  • Shut down your laptop completely.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).
  • Hold down the power button for about 30 seconds to drain any residual power.
  • Reinsert the battery (if applicable), reconnect the power adapter, and power on your laptop to see if the LED colors have normalized.

Check for Physical Damage:

  • Inspect the affected keys and surrounding areas for any physical damage or debris that could be affecting the LED lights.

Consider External RGB Keyboard:

  • If the issue persists and you prefer consistent lighting across all keys, consider using an external RGB keyboard as a workaround.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, it's possible that there is a hardware problem with the LEDs themselves, such as a component failure or connection issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Alden4,

Thank you for the quick reply and the suggestions. I had already tried most of your suggestions and they had no effect on the problem. The few left I will try but I believe the problem is a hardware issue with the LEDs in the individual keys since the location is random. I could not find any information that indicated if the individual keys and their LEDs could be replaced in the field without the need to have the entire keyboard replaced? I faced this with my previous Omen and replaced it with this unit because the cost and down time was not practical.

The keys work fine, and it does not impact the unit's performance so I can live with it as long as it does not get worse. Can you tell me if the LED keys can be replaced in the field or if I probably need a new keyboard if the additional tests you recommend don't work?

Thanks

Before doing anything permanent, just try to go to hp's site and download the keyboard drivers again.. this sometimes helps.. or else, its more likely that the leds failed

Rajivkar,

Thanks for your suggestion. I had tried that, but just in case I downloaded the driver again and it did not help. I think the key LED is the problem and will pursue that if it gets worse. As I mentioned the keys are functioning fine.
