HP Officejet Printer 9120e .....

Changed printer cartridges .

Replaced cartridges with non-original replacement cartridges.  Now getting continuous message on printer panel stating " Validating ...Please wait" ....

Haven't been able to move pass this message and use printer...  How do I move pass this message and regain use of the printer?

Hi @peabody53

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the concern. Thank you for clearly explaining the situation. Since the HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e became stuck on the "Validating... Please wait" message immediately after installing replacement cartridges, the printer may be unable to complete its cartridge verification process and is therefore preventing access to normal printer functions.

Please try the following steps in order:

Leave the printer powered on for at least 5-10 minutes.

  • Occasionally, the validation process can take several minutes to complete.
  • If the message never changes, continue with the next steps.

Perform a printer reset.

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer and allow it to start completely.

Reinstall the cartridges.

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove all newly installed cartridges.
  • Check for any protective tape, packaging material, or debris on the cartridge electrical contacts.
  • Reinstall the cartridges firmly into their color-matched slots until they click into place.
  • Close the access door and observe whether the validation process completes.

If the printer remains on the validation screen, test with the previously used cartridges (if available).

  • Reinstall the prior cartridges and restart the printer.
  • This helps determine whether the printer can complete startup with a different cartridge set.

Verify cartridge compatibility.

  • Ensure the replacement cartridges are designed for the HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e series and are the correct cartridge family for your printer's region.
  • Incompatible or incorrectly programmed cartridges can prevent the validation process from completing.

If the printer becomes responsive after startup, update the printer firmware using the HP App.

  • Open the HP App on your computer or mobile device.
  • Select the printer.
  • Check for available printer firmware updates and install any that are offered.
  • Restart the printer after the update.

If the printer is still displaying only "Validating... Please wait" and you cannot access any menus, please let us know whether:

  • The cartridges installed are HP Original cartridges or third-party replacements.
  • The printer display ever shows an error message other than "Validating... Please wait."
  • The previous cartridges are available for testing.

That information will help us provide the next HP-specific troubleshooting steps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
