I also have an HP Victus. I recently changed the thermal paste, and in some games, like Far Cry 6 on High settings, I get a stable 60 FPS, but the CPU runs at 80–90°C... I don’t understand why! Can anyone help me?" Thanks

@Ambrozia99,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Your HP Victus laptop’s performance is actually good (holding 60 FPS on High in Far Cry 6), and the CPU temperature you are seeing (80–90 °C) is normal for gaming laptops under load, even after repasting. Here’s why and what you can do:

1. Normal temperature range:

  • Modern Intel and AMD mobile CPUs are designed to operate safely up to around 95–100 °C before thermal throttling.

  • Gaming laptops have compact cooling systems, so 80–90 °C under heavy load is to be expected.

2. Why it happens:

  • Far Cry 6 is a CPU + GPU intensive game, so both chips generate heat.

  • Even with new thermal paste, you won’t see “desktop-like” temps because of the Victus’ slim chassis and limited airflow.

3. Things you can do to improve thermals:

4. When to worry:

  • If temps exceed 95 °C constantly, or if performance suddenly drops (FPS dips, stuttering), that may indicate throttling or poor paste contact. Otherwise, 80–90 °C is safe.

In short: your gaming laptop is working as intended. You can optimize airflow and power settings, but those temperatures are well within safe operating range for your HP Victus.

Kind Regards,
