OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck0000 IDS Base Model

Hi,

Whenever I press the "Calculator" button on my laptop, for some reason it infinitely opens the calculator app and I can't end the task or stop it without powering off my computer. I've already looked at PowerToys to see if I could unbind it along with things I could do with resetting the keyboard drivers and don't want to full reset my laptop yet.

Anyone else come across this problem?

Thanks!

Hi @lightsikers

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

The issue you're experiencing, where pressing the Calculator button causes the app to open repeatedly and uncontrollably, is likely due to a stuck key event or a software-level misconfiguration. Let's go through a few steps to troubleshoot and resolve this:

Check for Stuck Key or Debounce Issue

  • Gently press and release the Calculator button several times to ensure it’s not physically stuck.
  • Use an external keyboard temporarily to confirm if the issue is isolated to the laptop’s built-in keyboard.

Disable the Calculator Key via Registry (Temporary Workaround)

If the key is mapped to a specific scan code, you can disable it using the registry:

  1. Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter.

  2. Navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout

  3. Right-click and choose New > Binary Value, name it Scancode Map.

  4. Set the value to disable the Calculator key. Example:

    00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    02 00 00 00
    00 00 3A 00
    00 00 00 00

(This disables the Calculator key mapped to scan code 3A. You may need to confirm the exact scan code using a tool like Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator)

  5. Restart your PC.

Reinstall Keyboard Drivers

  1. Open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager).
  2. Expand Keyboards, right-click your keyboard device, and choose Uninstall device.
  3. Restart your laptop to reinstall the driver automatically.

Use HP OMEN Command Center or OMEN Gaming Hub

Some OMEN models allow remapping or disabling special keys via OMEN Gaming Hub:

  • Download or update it from the Microsoft Store.
  • Check under Keyboard or Macros section if the Calculator key can be remapped or disabled.

BIOS Update (if available)

Sometimes firmware updates resolve key mapping issues:
