HP Omen 16 Laptops have problems with games using RE Engine (Monster Hunter Rise, Devil May Cry 5, Street Fighter 6 etc.) where the computer just crashes entirely and reboots. There are no problems with temperatures or anything. Using the drivers provided by HP works, but they are so old that they have issues with newer games. This issue occurs when using the updated drivers from AMD website itself.

After some testing, I noticed it might be a issue about power management. If I unplug the charger then try playing the game, it works completely fine (although with poor performance obviously). I further tested that by trying to manually limit STAPM power by using Universal x86 Tuning Utility and it actually prevented the laptop from crashing, but this time the game was crashing. I tried slowly increasing the limit and observing, sadly there was no sweet spot. Its only 1 watt away from the game crash turning into a system crash.

I have already tried the usual stuff like formatting, changing Windows versions, reinstalling game and drivers, also trying different versions of drivers etc. What could be done about this?

Hi @iiuitto

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

The crashes on HP Omen 16 laptops with RE Engine games are linked to conflicts between AMD’s latest drivers and HP’s power management firmware. The most reliable workaround is to use HP‑provided drivers or adjust power/TDP settings in BIOS, I would request you to please follow the steps:

Use HP‑Certified Drivers

  • HP’s OEM drivers avoid the crash, though they are older.
  • Install via HP Support Assistant or HP’s driver page for your Omen 16 model. https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers
  • This ensures compatibility with HP’s firmware and power management.

 Adjust Power/TDP Settings

  • In BIOS, lower the CPU TDP from the default 45W to 35W.
  • This reduces instability when the charger is connected.
  • Test stability with RE Engine games after adjustment.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I have checked the link you sent but my Omen Hub does not have such settings. For the BIOS, after a little bit of research, pressing CTRL + F10 will let me access advanced settings but when I did that, there was only 1 settings called precision boosting (or something like that I'm not very sure). Is there a different way to access those power settings? And also as I said, HP drivers are old and causes problems with new games so using them is not an option for me sadly.

For Venom21, I have tried both using internal GPU and external GPU by selecting them from Graphics Options settings in Windows but both of them doesn't solve it.
