Hello!
A simple question from someone who is pretty new in understanding computers and their components.
I own an HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec1000 Laptop and I was curious about the difference between the integrated graphics card (AMD Radeon Graphics on the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H) compared to the installed GPU (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with Max-Q Design).
In my research, the installed card is better, but when running games, even on low quality graphics, my machine sputters and lags. But when I force programs to run through the AMD card things run buttery smooth (albeit on low graphics).
Was my research wrong? Or is this an issue that needs sniffing out?
Thank you!

Hi @Phony,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your concern!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Understanding Integrated vs. Dedicated GPUs
Your HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec1000 comes with two types of GPUs:
Integrated GPU (AMD Radeon Graphics on Ryzen 7 4800H)
- Built directly into the processor.
- Uses system RAM for graphics processing.
- Power-efficient but not as powerful as a dedicated GPU.
- Best for light gaming, video playback, and general computing.
Dedicated GPU (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q)
- A separate, more powerful graphics card.
- Has its own VRAM (video memory) for better performance.
- Designed for high-performance gaming and demanding tasks like video editing.
Why Is Your Game Running Better on the Integrated GPU?
Your GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q should outperform the integrated Radeon GPU, but if you're experiencing lag and stuttering when using the dedicated GPU, here are some possible reasons:
The Game Might Be Running on the Integrated GPU by Default
- Some laptops automatically switch between GPUs to save power.
- Check which GPU is being used for your game:
- Right-click on the desktop → Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
- Go to Manage 3D settings → Program Settings.
- Select the game and set it to High-performance NVIDIA processor.
Outdated or Incorrect Drivers
- Ensure both your NVIDIA and AMD chipset drivers are up to date:
- Open Device Manager → Expand Display Adapters → Right-click your GPU and select Update driver.
Power Settings Might Be Limiting Performance
- If your laptop is in "Battery Saver" mode, it might not be using full GPU power.
- Go to Control Panel → Power Options and set it to High Performance.
- Plug in your laptop while gaming to maximize performance.

The GPU Might Be Overheating or Thermal Throttling
- Gaming laptops heat up under load, and high temperatures can reduce performance.
- Use software like MSI Afterburner to monitor GPU temps.
- Make sure your laptop has proper airflow and isn't overheating.
The GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q Is Optimized for Lower Power Use
- The Max-Q design is a power-efficient version of the GTX 1660 Ti.
- It runs at lower clock speeds to reduce heat and power consumption.
- This means its performance is slightly lower than the standard GTX 1660 Ti.
What Should You Do?
Ensure the game is using the NVIDIA GPU in the control panel.
Update all GPU drivers and Windows updates.
Check power settings to make sure the laptop is in "High Performance" mode.
Monitor GPU temperature and clean vents if needed.
Consider using an external cooling pad for better airflow.
Your GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q should perform better than the integrated Radeon Graphics, so if the problem persists, further troubleshooting may be needed. Let me know if you need more help! 😊
