Before I ask my question, I'm on a budget. I have two 8gb sodimm ddr4 in my laptop at the time. The plan is to upgrade. Would it be okay if I pull one 8gb ram and place a 16gb ram, or would it be better if I just leave one 16gb ram?

Hi:
It would be better to install the 16 GB chip along with one of the 8 GB chips.
Either way, the notebook's memory is going to run in the lower performing single channel mode, until you can replace the other 8 GB chip with a 16 GB chip so it runs in dual channel mode. as it is now with 2 x 8 GB.
Below is the link to the Crucial memory report for your notebook.

You would want one of the DDR4-2400 memory kits, because that is as fast as the processor your notebook has, can run the memory at.
