Hi danielkassas,

I have been seeing very similar behavior on my HP Victus 16 and wanted to ask whether you ever found a solution.

Mine is the Ryzen 7 7840HS / RTX 3050 model. The laptop would sometimes have episodes where the screen goes black, the fans ramp up hard, and the keyboard backlight flickers. In some cases the screen comes back after a bit, but other times the system becomes partially unresponsive.

In my case, I found a kernel panic related to thermals earlier on, so I replaced the CPU and GPU thermal paste. That seemed to help for about a week, but then the issue came back and I later found a TPM panic instead. Because of that, I am starting to suspect the issue may not be only CPU/GPU paste. My current theory is that the VRM or surrounding power components may need new thermal pads or thermal putty, since I only repasted the CPU and GPU and did not redo the VRM contact material.

Did you ever find out what was actually causing your problem, and did you manage to fix it?

Shocked we're seeing similar issues around the same time.

Hi @hans_g123,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I completely understand how  it must be to deal with intermittent black screen issues, especially when you’ve already tried steps like repasting the CPU/GPU. Thank you for sharing the details of your troubleshooting so far it really helps narrow things down.

Could you please confirm the below details :

  • When the issue typically occurs (during gaming, idle, charging, etc.).
  • Whether you notice any error codes or logs apart from the kernel/TPM .
  • If the system BIOS and drivers are fully updated through HP Support Assistant or Windows Update.

In the meantime, here are a few steps you can try:

  • BIOS Update & Reset: Ensure you’re running the latest BIOS version. Sometimes a reset to default settings can help stabilize power management.
  • Driver Updates: Update both AMD chipset drivers and NVIDIA GPU drivers directly from HP’s support page for your model.
  • Hard Reset: Disconnect all peripherals, hold the power button for ~15 seconds, then restart. This clears residual power states.
  • HP Hardware Diagnostics: Run the built-in diagnostics (press F2 at startup) to check for hardware anomalies.

If the issue persists after these steps, we may need to look deeper into whether it’s a hardware-level fault (like thermal pads, as you mentioned) or a firmware/driver conflict

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
