Dear HP Support Team,

I am writing regarding an ongoing hardware issue with my HP Victus 16 laptop that is widely reported among other owners of this model.

My device is experiencing the known lid sensor / modern standby issue, where the system incorrectly detects the lid as closed. This causes the screen to turn off, the power button light to shut off, and the system to enter Modern Standby despite the laptop remaining physically open and in active use. Event Viewer consistently logs events indicating the system is entering Modern Standby due to a “Lid” reason, even though the lid is not closed.

I understand that my device is currently out of warranty, however this issue appears to be a design or hardware defect affecting many HP Victus 16 units. Unfortunately, there is no true fix available that resolves the issue without significantly impacting performance or usability (such as disabling Modern Standby or forcing high-performance power states).

I rely on this laptop for daily use, and this behavior disrupts productivity and system stability. Given that this is a well-documented issue with no proper end-user resolution, I am respectfully requesting that HP consider one of the following as a goodwill accommodation:

  • A repair or component replacement related to the lid sensor issue

  • An exception service option despite the warranty status

  • Any official fix, remediation, or internal guidance that addresses this issue without degrading system performance

Hi @stasia23,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how incredibly frustrating and disruptive this lid‑sensor issue has been for you. When your HP Victus 16 suddenly behaves as if the lid is closed, the screen gently fading to black, the power light slipping off, and the system dropping into Modern Standby right in the middle of your work, it can feel like the laptop is working against you rather than with you. You have explained the situation very clearly, and I want you to know: your experience is valid, and what you are seeing aligns with behavior we have observed on a small number of HP Victus units where the lid‑open sensor becomes overly sensitive.

Let’s try a few HP‑recommended steps to ensure nothing was overlooked

These steps are safe and will not impact your data or performance.

1. Update BIOS, chipset, and system firmware

Sometimes the lid‑sensor timing logic is improved in newer firmware releases.
Please ensure everything is up to date via HP Support Assistant or your model’s HP driver page.

2. Perform an EC (Embedded Controller) Reset

This helps re‑initialize the lid‑sensor logic.

  1. Power off the laptop
  2. Disconnect AC power
  3. Press and hold Power for 15 seconds
  4. Reconnect AC → Power on

You should feel the system take a slightly deeper, slower “first breath” after an EC reset; that’s normal.

3. Check for magnetic interference

Because the Victus uses a magnetic lid sensor, sometimes items around the laptop can mimic a lid‑close signal, such as:

  • Magnetic smartwatch bands
  • Magnetic tablet covers
  • Desk speakers
  • Phone cases with magnets
  • Metal desk surfaces

Try using the laptop in a clear area to rule this out.

4. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

Restart → Tap F2 → System Tests
Run the System Board and Power tests.

These tests can sometimes identify whether the sensor is stuck or misreading.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
