Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution
HP Recommended

I have a HP Omen 16.1 laptop and these days I am facing a problem of Flickering Screen with Flickering of Power Button Light as well. I don't know what is causing it. Sometimes the powerlight is off but laptop is running. When connected to external screen, the display on external screen is showing fine. Secondly, laptop doesn't turn on sometimes even when plugged in.

would appreciate any help in this regard.

Thanks.

Hi @ASKhuwaja,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  1. What is the exact HP OMEN 16.1 model number ?
  2. When did this issue first start after an update, drop, overheating event, or liquid exposure, or did it appear gradually?
  3. Does the flickering occur:
    • Immediately at startup, or only after Windows loads?
    • When you move or slightly adjust the screen hinge?
  4. Does the problem happen on battery only, on AC power only, or both?
  5. Are there any beep codes, blinking LED patterns, or error messages when the laptop fails to power on?

Troubleshooting steps to try

1. Perform a Hard Reset (Very Important)

This can clear residual power issues:

  • Power off the laptop
  • Disconnect the charger
  • Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds
  • Plug the charger back in and try powering on

2. Check for Hinge or Cable Sensitivity

  • Slowly open and close the lid while the laptop is on
  • If flickering changes with movement, it strongly suggests a loose or damaged display cable near the hinge

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Power off the laptop
  • Power it on and immediately press F2 repeatedly
  • Run:
    • Display test
    • Power and battery test
This can sometimes catch panel or power rail issues

4. Test in BIOS (Important)

  • Enter BIOS using F10
  • Leave the system idle for a few minutes
  • If the screen or power light flickers inside BIOS, the issue is definitely hardware-related

5. Inspect the Charger and Port

  • Ensure you’re using the original HP OMEN charger
  • Check for looseness, heat, or flickering charge LED when the cable is touched
  • Power instability can cause both screen and LED flicker

6. Update BIOS and HP Firmware (If System Stays On Long Enough)

  • Install the latest BIOS and EC firmware from HP for your model
Power-light behavior is often controlled by the EC firmware.

    I hope this helps.

Hello @Deep_World

1. I have an HP Omen 16t-wd000 Laptop.

2. The issue started when I did extensive high performing tasks specially 3D Model and Animation Rendering. The laptop used to perform well during the process but once powered off, then either the screen and power light used to flicker or it doesnot turn on completely.

3. The flickering occur immediately at the start-up screen. So far I the screen does not flicker when I move the screen hinge.

4. The problem occurs on both battery and AC power.

5. No error messages or beep codes. Just bitlocker recovery screen when constant flickering occurs.

Hi @ASKhuwaja,

Thanks for your response.

Given these symptoms, the issue may be related to one or more of the following:

  • Thermal stress affecting internal components (such as the GPU, system board, or display controller)
  • Firmware or BIOS instability after heavy GPU/CPU load
  • Power delivery or motherboard-related behavior rather than the display panel itself

Please try the steps below, in order, if you have not already done so:

  1. BIOS Update / Recovery
    • If the system powers on intermittently, ensure the BIOS is updated to the latest version available for your model from HP Support.
    • If startup is unstable, attempt a BIOS recovery (Win + B held while powering on).
  2. HP Hardware Diagnostics
    • When possible, press Esc repeatedly at startup and select F2 System Diagnostics.
    • Run both System Board and Graphics tests.

I hope this helps.

Hello @DEEP_WORLD

I ran diagnostics, all tests passed. The issue remains same. I learned new thing about the issue. The screen flickers and the complete keyboard becomes unresponsive with it that is why the power light is blinking while the system is running at the back completely fine I can hear windows sounds and laptop fans working. This all happens when doing high graphics work.
