OMEN Laptop - 15-dh1020tx
Microsoft Windows 11

So I've been experiencing problems with my touchpad, where the driver just keeps failing when I turn on my laptop.  I found out that it will keep failing every time I turn on my laptop with a mouse connected. I don't know why that happens. I tried disabling and reenabling it, uninstalling it, but it just won't work if a mouse is connected when the laptop turns on.

Hi @Advens,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Have you noticed if the touchpad works fine when no external mouse is connected at startup?
  • Did this problem begin recently, or has it been happening since you first started using the laptop?

In the meantime, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check Touchpad Settings in BIOS
    • Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS.
    • Look for “Internal Pointing Device” and ensure it’s enabled.
  2. Update Drivers via HP Support Assistant
    • Open HP Support Assistant and check for updates to the touchpad driver and system BIOS.
    • Install any available updates and restart your laptop.
  3. Windows Settings
    • Go to Settings > Devices > Touchpad and confirm it’s enabled.
    • Also check under Mouse settings if there’s an option that disables the touchpad when a mouse is connected.
  4. Reinstall Synaptics/Precision Drivers
    • Uninstall the current touchpad driver from Device Manager.
    • Download the latest driver for your OMEN 15-dh1020tx from the  https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers.
    • Install it fresh and restart your system.
  5. Test Without Mouse Connected
  • Boot the laptop without the external mouse plugged in, then connect it after startup to see if the touchpad continues working.

I hope this helps.

Yeah, I tried doing all of that, but it still doesn't work. The I2C HID Device keeps failing to start. I didn't really find the settings for the touchpad in my boot settings. The touchpad has been having problems for a couple of months now, but it used to be fixable by disabling and re-enabling the driver.

This is usually caused by the touchpad driver or BIOS being set to disable the internal touchpad when an external mouse is detected. Check your BIOS/UEFI settings and the touchpad driver control panel (Synaptics/ELAN/Precision) for an option like “Disable touchpad when USB mouse is connected.” Updating or reinstalling the manufacturer’s touchpad driver (not the generic Windows one) often resolves this behaviour.
