Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-r1000 (8Z7S7AV)

Hello everyone,

I'm back with another strange and frustrating issue.

My one-month-old laptop has already had its motherboard replaced twice (the first replacement was also faulty—just like the original one that came from the same factory...) and both RAM sticks were replaced as well.

Now it has returned from the service center, and I'm facing a new problem...

One of my USB ports is not working. When I plug in a USB flash drive, I get the following error:

"USB device not recognized. The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it."

At this point, I plugged the USB drive into another port, and it worked just fine. So the issue isn’t with my USB drive (I’ve also tried other flash drives with the same result).

I searched online for solutions and tried almost everything suggested: uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, reformatting the system, running a virus scan, etc.—but nothing has worked so far.

Additionally, I installed Tails OS on the USB drive, booted the computer with it, and tested the problematic port again. It didn’t recognize the device there either.

It’s very likely that the service team missed a connection inside.

I was wondering if you have any suggestions or ideas.

Best regards

@aminaki, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Victus by HP 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I'm sorry to hear about the troubles you're experiencing with your Victus by HP laptop. If one of your USB ports is not working after the recent repairs, here are a few steps you could try:

Check Device Manager:

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Look for any devices with an exclamation mark, particularly under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".
  • If there is an issue, try updating the drivers by right-clicking the device and selecting Update driver.

Try Another Device:

  • Check if the USB port works with a different device (like a different flash drive, a mouse, or a keyboard) to rule out the possibility of a faulty USB device.

USB Port Testing:

  • Use other USB ports to check if they are functioning properly. If other ports are working, this might indicate a problem with that particular USB port.

Check for Physical Damage:

  • Ensure there's no physical obstruction or damage inside the port that might prevent the device from making a proper connection.

System Updates:

  • Make sure that your laptop’s operating system is up to date. Sometimes, system updates can fix these types of issues.

BIOS Update:

  • Check the HP Support site for your laptop model to see if there's a BIOS update available. Follow the instructions carefully as updating the BIOS can resolve hardware-related issues.

Reboot into Safe Mode:

  • Boot your laptop into safe mode and test the USB port there. If it works, there could be a software conflict in the standard Windows environment.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hello zoey7886,
Thank you for your response. I have tried all the solutions you suggested. However, none of them worked (I tried different ports, different USB sticks, etc.). There is no visible physical damage either.
Today, I will contact HP support and open a service request. This will be the second time in two months that I am sending my device to service (without being able to use it at all).

Have a nice day.
