Upgrade help and info

Okay I changed the boot order to USB first, kept going to the drive since there’s a partial install of the OS there.

i started over now, maybe it will just take literally all night. When I did my old laptop with a Microsoft boot drive, it was installed and up within 45 minutes or so then I did the drivers manually.

My MS boot drive/reinstall drive was made on Lenovo, will  I take be okay to use?

I have one made with my Lenovo, which is the 64bit windows 10 os too. Can you use one made from another PC?

Yes the MS ISO will be faster because it doesnt have to install all the HP Stuff and the recovery partitions, etc.

Yes you can use the MS installer made from any other Windows computer. If it was made to boot from UEFI, you wont have an issue recognizing it.

If it doesn't recognize it, the Lenovo made it compatible with Legacy bios. In such case, you can switch your bios over to Legacy Mode (and disable Secure Boot)  and it will then see the USB Pen drive.

I made it on the Lenovo and had used it to reinstall windows when I installed a standard SATA SSD in it. Worked fine, I seen the settings you speak of in BIOS if it comes to that.

Im running the HP a second time now, it’s just confusing how it reads because it goes to the windows screen then back to the installing software screen, so I thought maybe it was stuck in the loop you mentioned that’s why I killed it.

so far the bottom bar is as far along as it was the first time around, so I’ll just let it sit for a minute, as I’m typing this I seek the screen resolution go crazy so now it’s not fitting properly, so I assume it’s installing drivers for video too.

so is this thing creating a recovery partition now on my main drive as well?

Well, it might not put the old F11 partition on if your system is brand new. HP did away with that in the 2019 models.  But it will put the diagnostics partition back on.

The HP recovery process is much longer than the generic MS ISO, yes

Okay man so, it’s all done!! Wow finally.

heres what I learned, the HP recovery media installed all factory software, it’s like it was a recovery partition on USB. As far as I can tell it installed everything it came with, even antivirus.

i will keep tinkering, however PCIe 3x4 speed.

No problem, here’s a side by side of the old benchmark to the new, that’s only 1 pass though I got it a little faster other times. Like you said, this is just benchmarks, I don’t see a huge difference in system speed for general things. I’m sure tomorrow I’ll see it when I install my games and copy my files back over, stuff like that. This took forever so it’s bed time now haha.

now to tackle the RAM, I’ll call amazon in the morning and see what can be done or if I’m SOL on the funds.

I ordered the 16GB kit listed on the crucial website, found the exact model number on amazon. It looks like they’ll allow me to send back the Kingston for a refund based on the “defective” aspect, I wrote not working as a pair so it allowed to submit a return ticket and get the return label. I’ll send that back out tomorrow or Monday.

the new kit should be here Sunday so I’ll be back to update then, I foresee no issues though. I’ll update just so we can put the thread to rest and let it it be known to other folks what actually worked.

i also wanted to ask why my capacity is so low, shouldn’t it be 500 after formatting? I don’t see a partition but with the amount of available space looks like there’s a partition some where?

Take a look at this article that explains why its lower than you expected...

Windows calculates hard drives as powers of 1024 while hard drive manufacturers use powers of 1000.

That on top of formatting that also takes up some space, your system will easily show approximately 35-45GB less than the 512GB advertised. This is normal for everyone.
