Hi everyone, I have just been given a HP OMEN 17-an013na Laptop, Intel Core i7, 8GB, 1TB, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060, 17.3”, Shadow Black for Christmas, brand new.
Now to make it ideal for me, I'd like to upgrade it by adding a SSD as well as another 8gb of ram.
So my query is; Can this be done easily enough? Is it just a matter of 'plug and play' or do I have to match the RAM with the 8gb that's already in there, or swap it out for a single 16gb strip?
With the SSD, is there space to fit one in as well as the existing HDD?
Is is there anything else I need to be aware of? Will this invalidate any warranty? I would have hoped not as it does state in the literature that it's designed to be upgraded.
Or do I just try and return it and pay extra for one with the additional RAM and SSD?
Many thanks
Andy

Hello @Andy1839
Yes you can certainly upgrade the memory and SSD yourself.
But if its easy to return it to the store and get a different one, by all means that wil be easier and then those upgrades are covered by the same HP warranty.
Otherwise, you can add another 8GB stick of ram. The system will take up to 32 GB total.
Yes you need to match the timings and density of the existing stick, just like any PC.
The official part number is 8 GB 2400 MHz 1.2 v DDR4 shared #862398-850

- Or you can use a tool like Speccy and grab the exact timings from the current ram installed, then shop around.
- Crucial has a ram finder that works very well... http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP---Compaq/hp-omen-17-an000-cto
You can install an M.2 NVMe SSD also.
The Maintenance Manual gives all this information and instructions for installing ram and ssd.

Do create your HP USB Recovery media before anything else first, just to have on hand in case you have to reinstall to the HDD someday.
IF you have other questions on what to do, let us know.
PS: Usually, you will also have to order a separate m.2 screw for the SSD. The motherboard might not have one already.
Size is 2.0 x 3mm (CM2x3-3.3)

@Photoray002
Hi, thats great and really comprehensive thank you so much for that.
Im not going to pretend to know exactly what every bit of it means, as my last pc was a 386DX2/66 years ago and I haven't really used one since, but I'll see how I get on.
Thanks again!
