What can be the issue for flickering screen, Is my screen about to die, or is it a software problem?

Then it's hardware related issue. In 90% of cases it's due to display cable. Reparing display cable or replacing it is won't that expensive. You have to visit nearest hp service center with laptop and it's documents. If you have any doubt related to service center or documents ,etc then contact hp agent directly using below link:

In case it's GPU or Screen issue, choose as per price. Although it's rare. So don't worry

Boot into Bios and check if it happens there as well.
