Key Reasons HDR May Be Unavailable

  • Display panel type: Not all laptop displays support HDR. Even high-end gaming models may use fast refresh rate panels that prioritize speed over HDR capability.
  • Windows HDR settings: If HDR is disabled in Windows Settings, it won’t activate—even if supported.
  • Graphics driver settings: The “10-Bit Pixel Format” being disabled (as shown in your image) can prevent HDR from functioning.
  • Connection type: HDR requires a direct internal display or an external HDR-capable monitor connected via HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4.
  • Color depth and refresh rate: HDR may be blocked if the display is set to a refresh rate or resolution that exceeds HDR limits.

 

Steps to Check and Enable HDR

Verify display HDR capability:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display settings.
  • Check if your internal display lists HDR support under “Color format” and “Bit depth”.

 

Enable 10-Bit Pixel Format:

  • Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution.
  • Select your display, then click Use NVIDIA color settings.
  • Set Output color depth to 10 bpc and Output color format to RGB or YCbCr422.

 

Enable HDR in Windows:

  • Go to Settings > System > Display.
  • Select your display and toggle Use HDR to On.
  • If it’s grayed out, the display may not support HDR or the driver settings need adjustment.

 

Connect external HDR monitor (if needed):

  • Use HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.4 cable.
  • Ensure the external monitor supports HDR10 and is set to HDR mode in its own menu.

 

Update NVIDIA drivers and Windows:

  • You’ve already confirmed your drivers are up to date—great job.
  • Also check Windows Update > Optional updates for any display firmware updates.

 

If HDR remains unavailable after these steps, it’s likely due to the panel not supporting HDR natively. You can still enjoy vibrant visuals using high refresh rates and color calibration tools.
