@DurianLychee, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
Force Restart Your Laptop
Sometimes, the screen may go black while the system is still running. A force restart can help clear any temporary glitches.
- Press and hold the power button for about 10-15 seconds until the laptop powers off completely.
- Wait a few seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on.
- Check if the screen lights up after the restart.
Check the Display Brightness
If the screen appears black but you can hear sound, the display brightness might have been turned down all the way.
- Press the F2 (brightness up) or F3 (brightness down) keys on your keyboard to adjust the screen brightness.
- You might also try Fn + F2 or Fn + F3 if you're using the function keys with the Fn key.
External Monitor Test
Since you can still hear sound, the laptop is likely working, but the display may be malfunctioning. You can test this by connecting your laptop to an external monitor or TV.
- Use an HDMI cable to connect your laptop to an external monitor.
- If the external monitor works, then the issue is likely with your laptop’s display.
- If the external monitor also shows a black screen, the issue might be deeper (such as a problem with the GPU, drivers, or motherboard).
Power Reset (Battery Drain)
Sometimes, the system might be stuck in a state that can only be cleared by draining the power.
- Turn off the laptop.
- Disconnect all cables, including power, USB devices, etc.
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain any remaining power from the system.
- Afterward, reconnect the power adapter and turn the laptop back on.

Boot into Safe Mode
The issue could be caused by a problematic driver or software. Booting into Safe Mode allows you to troubleshoot without third-party programs or drivers.
- Turn off the laptop completely.
- Turn it on, and as soon as the HP logo appears, press the F8 or Shift + F8 keys repeatedly (if the laptop starts booting, immediately turn it off and repeat this process).
- From the options that appear, select Safe Mode.
- Once in Safe Mode, check if the display works properly. If it does, it’s likely a driver or software issue.
- You can try updating or uninstalling recent drivers under Device Manager (search for "Device Manager" in the Start menu).
Update Graphics Drivers
If the issue is related to display drivers, updating them may fix it.
- In Safe Mode (or regular mode if the screen works), go to Device Manager.
- Expand the Display Adapters section.
- Right-click on your graphics card (e.g., NVIDIA or Intel) and select Update Driver.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to let Windows find and install the latest driver.
Alternatively, you can visit the HP Support Website to download the latest graphics drivers for your laptop.
Reset the BIOS Settings
Sometimes, resetting the BIOS can resolve hardware-related issues, including display problems.
- Turn off your laptop.
- Turn it on and press the Esc key (or F10) repeatedly to enter the BIOS setup.
- Once in the BIOS, look for an option to Restore Defaults or Reset to Default Settings.
- Save and exit the BIOS and see if the issue persists.

Perform a System Restore
If the issue started recently and you’ve made changes to the system (like installing new drivers or software), performing a System Restore to a point when the laptop was working fine could help.
- Press Windows + R, type rstrui and hit Enter.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to restore your system to an earlier point.
- Make sure to choose a restore point before the black screen issue started.
Check for Overheating
Overheating can cause the screen to go black or the laptop to become unresponsive.
- Shut down the laptop and let it cool down for 10-15 minutes.
- Ensure that the laptop’s cooling system (fans and vents) is not clogged with dust or debris. Use compressed air to clean them out if necessary.
- Make sure the laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface to allow for proper ventilation.
I hope these steps help resolve the issue
