HP Omen 17
I'm not sure why, but my Z key will repeatedly get stuck and type out a string of letters at seemingly random intervals. There is definitely no dirt under it, and if there is a turbo function on this keyboard I've activated by accident I'm not aware of it and it isn't affecting any other keys. Is this a problem anyone else has experienced, or is there any advice you can offer? Even restarting doesn't always fix this, and it's very intermittent - sometimes it'll do it without me even pressing it.

Hi @Dave0711,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with the Z key on your HP Omen 17's keyboard could be caused by various factors. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue.

Check for Physical Obstructions:

  • Ensure there is no debris, like crumbs or dust, under the key. Even a tiny particle can cause issues.

Keyboard Test:

  • Try an online keyboard test to see if the key is consistently registering multiple presses. If it is, this suggests a hardware issue.

Update or Reinstall Keyboard Drivers:

  • Outdated or corrupted keyboard drivers can sometimes cause problems. Update or reinstall your keyboard drivers through the Device Manager (on Windows) or System Preferences (on Mac).

Disable Key Repeat:

  • In Windows, you can adjust the key repeat settings. Go to Control Panel > Keyboard > Adjust how quickly keys repeat. Set both Repeat delay and Repeat rate to long. On a Mac, go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab and adjust the Key Repeat and Delay Until Repeat sliders to your preference.

Test in Safe Mode:

  • Boot your computer into Safe Mode and check if the issue persists. This will help determine if any third-party software is causing the problem.

Keyboard Firmware Update:

  • Check HP's website for any available firmware updates for your laptop's keyboard. Sometimes, manufacturers release updates to address hardware issues.

External Keyboard:

  • If the issue persists and you have access to an external keyboard, try connecting it to your laptop. If the external keyboard works fine, the problem is likely with your laptop's built-in keyboard.

Check for Any Software or Macros:

  • Sometimes, keyboard issues can be caused by software running in the background. Check for any macros or hotkeys that may have been unintentionally set up to trigger the Z key.

Operating System Update:

  • Ensure your operating system is up-to-date. Sometimes, system updates can resolve issues with hardware.

Since the issue is intermittent, it might be challenging to identify the exact cause. Trying these steps can help you pinpoint and possibly resolve the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
