OMEN Laptop - 15-ek0013dx
Microsoft Windows 11

i have a problem where my device displays the bios error message of counterfiet battery as well as battery(primary) error 601 (2 different errors). The device only booted and ran while plugged in. It would shut down immediately after removing the plug. Initially, i thought the battery was no good. I bought -the proper- battery replacement and connected the new battery. However, the same issue still persisted, with the subtle change of the device not shutting down immediately after unplugged but rather takes around 2 minutes to shut down. The difference in performance between the two batteries may indicate that they're not fried by the rest of the device (as if both got fried they would exhibit much more similar behaviour and the newer battery is showing better performance ). Please help. thanks in advance

Hi @maz714,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing the battery issues with your OMEN Laptop (15-ek0013dx) could be related to the system's inability to properly detect or manage the battery, even after replacing it. The fact that you're getting a "counterfeit battery" warning and a "Battery (Primary) Error 601" error suggests there could be a problem with the laptop's battery firmware or related hardware.

Here's a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot this issue:

1. Check Battery Health and Calibration

  • Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:
    • Shut down your laptop.
    • Power it on and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly, then press F2 to open the diagnostics menu.
    • Select the Battery Test from the menu and run it. It will assess the health of the battery and tell you if there's a problem.
  • Battery Calibration:
    • If the test doesn't show a clear failure, try recalibrating the battery:
      1. Charge the battery fully (while the laptop is plugged in).
      2. Once it's charged, unplug the laptop and let it drain the battery until it shuts down automatically.
      3. Then, plug it back in and charge it fully again.
    • This may help the system recalibrate and detect the battery more accurately.

2. BIOS Update

  • Sometimes, battery issues can be caused by an outdated or corrupted BIOS. Here's how to update your BIOS:
    1. Visit the HP Support page and search for your model (OMEN 15-ek0013dx).
    2. Download the latest BIOS version if available.
    3. Follow the instructions to update your BIOS. Make sure your laptop is plugged in during the process.

3. Reset the BIOS

  • If you're still getting a counterfeit battery warning, resetting the BIOS may help.
    1. Turn off your laptop.
    2. Disconnect the power cord and battery.
    3. Hold down the power button for 15-20 seconds to discharge any residual power.
    4. Reconnect the battery and power cord, then try turning the laptop back on.

4. Check Battery Connection

  • Ensure the battery is correctly seated and that all connectors are secure. Since you've already replaced the battery, double-check that there are no loose wires or damaged connectors between the battery and motherboard.

5. Clear Battery Error in BIOS

  • In some cases, clearing the battery error requires resetting the BIOS settings:
    1. Enter the BIOS by restarting the laptop and pressing F10 repeatedly when it starts.
    2. In the BIOS, look for an option to "Reset to Default" settings (this is usually under the "Exit" tab).
    3. Save and exit.

6. Power Management Settings

  • You may want to check your Windows power management settings:
    1. Open Control Panel > Power Options.
    2. Ensure your settings are set to "Balanced" or "High Performance."
    3. You can also disable "Fast Startup" under Power Options > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Uncheck Turn on fast startup.

7. Inspect the Battery's Firmware and Drivers

  • The counterfeit battery error could be caused by a mismatch in firmware. To resolve this:
    1. Open Device Manager and expand Batteries.
    2. Right-click on Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall device.
    3. Restart your laptop; Windows will automatically reinstall the drivers.
    4. If there are specific battery firmware updates available on HP’s support site, download and install them.

Refer to this document: OMEN Laptop - 15-ek0013dx User manual

HP Notebook PCs - 601 or 60X error is displayed on a black screen

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
