Hi @Scyloh,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your Victus by HP 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop is experiencing an issue where the screen remains black with just a cursor visible after closing and reopening the lid. This issue is usually related to power or display settings.

Here are a few steps you can try to resolve it without resorting to a hard reset:

1. Try Keyboard Shortcuts:

  • Ctrl + Alt + Del: See if the Task Manager or Lock Screen comes up. If it does, select Task Manager and see if you can restart Explorer.exe (the process that manages the desktop).
  • Windows + P: This opens the display projection settings. Try switching between different display modes (like "PC screen only" or "Duplicate") to refresh the display.

2. Check Power Settings:

  • Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
  • Ensure that "When I close the lid" is set to Sleep or Do Nothing for both On battery and Plugged in.
  • Sometimes, if it's set to Hibernate or Turn off the display, it may not wake correctly.

3. Update Graphics Drivers:

  • It could be a graphics driver issue. Go to Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click on your GPU (NVIDIA/AMD and Intel) and choose Update driver.
  • You can also download the latest graphics driver from the HP Support page or the GPU manufacturer's website (NVIDIA/AMD).

4. Disable Fast Startup:

  • Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on fast startup. Fast Startup can sometimes cause display issues.

5. Reboot Explorer.exe:

  • If you can see the cursor, you may be able to bring up Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  • In Task Manager, go to File > Run new task, type explorer.exe, and press Enter. This should bring your desktop back.

6. Check Windows Update:

  • Go to Settings > Windows Update and ensure there are no pending updates, as these sometimes address such issues.

If none of these steps help, try Safe Mode to test if third-party software is causing the issue:

  • Shift + Restart > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select Safe Mode.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
