Hi @hsn_alali,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, you're right in suspecting that the issue is not with the HDD or the SATA-to-USB adapter, especially since it works fine on your brother’s ASUS laptop. The fact that your HP Victus 15 fa1093xd keeps resetting the drive to unallocated space suggests a system-level issue, likely related to USB power management, driver conflicts, or disk caching behavior.

Let’s walk through the most effective steps to fix this:

1. Disable USB Selective Suspend

This prevents Windows from powering down the USB port:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings.
  2. Click Change advanced power settings.
  3. Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting.
  4. Set it to Disabled for both battery and plugged in.
  5. Click Apply and OK.

2. Turn Off Fast Startup

Fast Startup can cause improper dismounting of external drives:

  1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  2. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  3. Uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended).
  4. Save changes and restart.

3. Update or Reinstall USB and Storage Drivers

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and Disk drives.
  3. Right-click each USB Root Hub and your external HDD, then choose Update driver.
  4. If issues persist, uninstall the device and restart your laptop to reinstall it.

4. Disable Write Caching (Optional)

If the drive is being cached improperly:

  1. Open Device Manager > Disk Drives.
  2. Right-click your external HDD > Properties > Policies tab.
  3. Uncheck Enable write caching on the device.
  4. Click OK and safely eject the drive before unplugging.

5. Use a Different USB Port

Try using a USB 3.0 port (usually blue) or a different port altogether. Some ports may not provide stable power for external drives.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
