Microsoft Windows 11

I bought my omen 16 about a month ago. It was running fine until recently where I started having 150+ pings on video games. I usually have 20 ping and even lower sometimes. I have never had this happen with any gaming laptop. To be quite honest, ping issues wasnt the only problem I had when I first bought this laptop, but Im over that and trying to fix this now.

I tried using task manager to close OMEN gaming hub as many people stated that it fixed the issue with high ping, but this didnt work. I tried using registry editor but that didnt work either. What else can I try to fix the high ping issue.

Hi @hanu03,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

High ping in online games can be frustrating, especially when it's a sudden change after previously good performance. Since closing OMEN Gaming Hub and using the registry editor haven't resolved the issue, here are a few additional steps you can try to address high ping on your HP Omen 16.

Check for Background Network Activity

  • Task Manager: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check the Network column for any applications consuming significant bandwidth.
  • Disable Automatic Updates: Sometimes, background apps like Windows Update or other software updates can cause high ping. Ensure updates aren't running in the background.

Network Optimization

  • Switch to Ethernet: If you’re using Wi-Fi, try using a wired Ethernet connection for a more stable and lower latency connection.
  • Move Closer to Router: If Ethernet isn't an option, try to move closer to your router or upgrade to a stronger Wi-Fi connection (5 GHz band if possible).
  • Reset Router: Power cycle your router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  • Change DNS Servers: Manually changing your DNS to Google’s (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare’s (1.1.1.1) DNS may improve latency.

Wi-Fi Network Settings

  • Disable Power Saving for Network Adapter: Go to Device Manager > Network Adapters, right-click your Wi-Fi or Ethernet adapter, and go to Properties. Under the Power Management tab, uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
  • Update Network Adapter Drivers: Ensure that your network adapter drivers are up-to-date. You can do this through Device Manager or download the latest version from the HP support website.

Firewall and Antivirus Configuration

  • Check Firewall Settings: Sometimes, overly strict firewall or antivirus settings can interfere with your network connection. Try temporarily disabling them to see if it improves ping.
  • Whitelist the Game: Ensure the game you're playing is whitelisted in your firewall or antivirus software.

Network Congestion

  • If there are multiple devices on your network using a lot of bandwidth (streaming, downloads, etc.), it can cause high ping. You may need to prioritize gaming traffic through Quality of Service (QoS) settings on your router.

Gaming Hub and Other Performance Apps

  • Reinstall OMEN Gaming Hub: If closing the app didn’t work, try reinstalling OMEN Gaming Hub. It may have corrupted settings affecting performance.
  • Disable Game Mode: Some users have reported issues with Windows Game Mode causing ping spikes. Disable it through Settings > Gaming > Game Mode.

Windows Network Troubleshooting

  • Run Network Troubleshooter: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status, scroll down, and click Network Troubleshooter.
  • Flush DNS: Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:

ipconfig /flushdns

  • This can help resolve DNS-related issues.

Third-Party Software Conflicts

  • Check for Software Conflicts: If you have other network monitoring or optimization software installed, they may conflict with your network connection. Try temporarily disabling or uninstalling them.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
