Hi @hid34

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Experiencing stutters and FPS drops during gaming can be immensely frustrating, but let's troubleshoot and try to optimize your HP Victus laptop for smoother performance:

1. Check for Thermal Throttling

  • Clean the Air Vents:
    • Dust buildup can cause overheating and trigger thermal throttling. Use compressed air to clean the vents.
  • Monitor Temperatures:
    • Install tools like HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner to keep track of CPU and GPU temperatures during gameplay.
    • If temperatures are consistently high (above 85°C), consider applying fresh thermal paste or using a cooling pad.

2. Update Drivers

  • Graphics Driver:
    • Ensure your Radeon RX 6500M drivers are up to date via the AMD Adrenalin Software or the AMD website.
    • Use the "Clean Install" option when updating to ensure no remnants of older drivers remain.
  • Chipset Driver:
    • Download the latest chipset driver for your Ryzen 5 5600H from AMD’s support page.
  • BIOS Update:
    • Visit the HP Support website and check for a BIOS update. BIOS updates can address hardware optimization.

3. Optimize Game and Graphics Settings

  • Lower Graphics Settings:
    • In-game, reduce resource-intensive settings like shadows, anti-aliasing, and texture quality.
    • Set the resolution to a slightly lower value (e.g., 720p) for more stable FPS.
  • Disable Radeon Features:
    • Open the AMD Adrenalin Software and disable features like Radeon Chill, Enhanced Sync, or Anti-Lag if they're causing interference.
  • V-Sync:
    • Enable or disable V-Sync in your game settings to prevent FPS fluctuations.

4. Adjust Power Settings

  • Switch to Performance Mode in Windows Power Settings:
    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options and select High Performance.
  • In the AMD Adrenalin Software, ensure the GPU is set to maximize performance rather than prioritize efficiency.

5. Check Background Processes

  • End Unnecessary Programs:
    • Use Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to close applications running in the background that are consuming resources.
  • Disable Start-Up Apps:
    • Disable unnecessary programs that launch on startup under the Startup tab in Task Manager.

6. Enable Dual-Channel RAM

  • If your laptop has a single stick of RAM, upgrading to dual-channel (two sticks of the same size and speed) can significantly improve gaming performance and reduce stuttering.

7. Test the SSD

  • Check for SSD Health:
    • Use tools like CrystalDiskInfo to ensure the SSD isn't experiencing issues, as a faulty drive can cause stutters.
  • Free Up Space:
    • Ensure your SSD has enough free space—keep at least 15-20% of the drive free.

8. Disable Full-Screen Optimization

  • Go to the game’s executable file:
    • Right-click the file, select Properties > Compatibility, and check Disable full-screen optimizations.
    • Click Apply and test your game again.

9. Reinstall or Validate Game Files

  • If the stuttering occurs with specific games:
    • Validate the game files via the launcher (e.g., Steam or Epic Games).
    • Consider reinstalling the game to eliminate file corruption.
