Subject: Repeated GPU Driver Crashes (LiveKernelEvent 141 – nvlddmkm) on HP Victus 15-fa0xxx

Device Details
Model: Victus by HP Gaming Laptop 15-fa0xxx
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Laptop GPU (4GB VRAM)
Integrated GPU: Intel UHD Graphics
RAM: 16 GB
OS: Windows 11
Location: Melbourne, Australia

Issue Description
My laptop has been experiencing repeated crashes while running games. The games either freeze or close unexpectedly shortly after launching. The Windows reliability report shows a hardware error with the following details:

Problem Event Name: LiveKernelEvent
Code: 141
Driver: nvlddmkm.sys
Bucket: LKD_0x141_TdrC_IMAGE_nvlddmkm.sys_Ampere_3D

This indicates that the NVIDIA GPU driver stops responding and Windows attempts to reset it, causing the application to crash.

Observed Behavior
• Games crash within minutes or immediately after starting.
• The issue occurs across multiple games including Valorant, Warhammer 40K, and Horizon Zero Dawn.
• Stress testing with FurMark runs without crashing.
• GPU temperatures remain below 80°C during load.

Troubleshooting Already Attempted
• Clean reinstallation of NVIDIA drivers using DDU.
• Updating Windows and all drivers.
• Disabling hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
• Updating graphics settings to prefer the NVIDIA GPU.
• Testing with MSI Afterburner underclocking.
• Verifying game files and reinstalling affected games.

Service History
I previously brought the laptop to an HP support center in T. Nagar, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The device was serviced and the operating system was reinstalled, but the issue persisted afterward.

Request
I would like assistance diagnosing whether this is a driver, BIOS, or hardware issue. If necessary, I would like to arrange an official diagnostic test or repair through HP support.

Thank you.

Hi @guardiansan,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand that you are experiencing repeated GPU driver crashes, such as the nvlddmkm error, which can be frustrating, but there are a few steps you can follow to potentially resolve this issue:

Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that both your discrete NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 GPU and integrated Intel UHD Graphics drivers are up to date. You can check the Official HP® Support or use the HP Support Assistant for driver updates.

Check for Windows Updates: Verify that your Windows 11 operating system is fully up to date. Operating system updates can sometimes include crucial fixes that resolve compatibility issues.

Adjust Power Settings: Switch your laptop’s power plan to “High Performance” to ensure that your GPU receives the necessary power during demanding tasks.

Disable Fast Startup: Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do, and uncheck the “Turn on fast startup” option under Shutdown settings. This can prevent certain issues at startup that affect the drivers.

Reinstall the GPU Drivers: Perform a clean installation of your NVIDIA drivers. First, uninstall the current drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) in Safe Mode, then download and install the latest version from the NVIDIA website.

Check for Thermal Issues: Ensure your laptop is not overheating. Use compressed air to clean any dust from vents, and consider using a cooling pad if necessary.

Perform a System Test: Use the HP Hardware Diagnostics tool to check your system for any hardware issues. This can help identify if there are any problems with your GPU or other components.

Game Settings: Lower the in-game graphics settings and see if the issue persists. Sometimes, running games in a windowed mode rather than full-screen can also help.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

HI @guardiansan,

Thank you for your response.

May I know if this issue is happening on all the games or a particular one?

Hi Gaurdiansan,

I got the same laptop. Have the same nvlddmkm Nvidia RTX 3050 DGPU crash in all medium to heavy loaded games. Also have tried everything same like you. All started happening once warranty expired so have contacted HP here in India. Just for physical check itself very high price, if they found nvidia replace they gonna quote around half of the laptop price. It will be very helpful if you found any solution, Please let me know...

I believe this issue many of them have same, its something not hardware issue. If so very bad batch product i bought.

Except mine is AMD processor:  Victus Gaming Laptop 15-fb0050AX (6F9V1PA)
