OMEN 15.6 inch Gaming Laptop PC 15-en1000 (2L1F1AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

"R" Button not working. Started having issues, then it stopped working completely. Does not seem to be a mechanical issue as the key "feels" ok and the same as other keys. Have removed the key and checked underneath, does not seem to be dirty. Have also re-installed keyboard drivers to no avail. Any tips and tricks? I dont feel super comfortable opening the laptop up more.
Thanks!

Hi @Nisseop, Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

I understand how frustrating it can be when a single key stops working especially on a gaming laptop like your OMEN 15-en1000.

Since you've already:

  • Verified the key isn't physically damaged or dirty,
  • Removed and inspected the keycap,
  • Reinstalled keyboard drivers,

Let’s try a few more steps to isolate and potentially resolve the issue:

Step 1: Test the Key Outside Windows

Use HP UEFI Hardware Diagnostics to check if the issue is hardware-related.

  1. Shut down your laptop.
  2. Power it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  4. Go to Component Tests > Keyboard Test.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions and press the "R" key when prompted.

If the "R" key does not register here, it's likely a hardware issue.

Step 2: Try a Clean Boot

Sometimes background software can interfere with keyboard input.

  1. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  2. Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  3. Go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager.
  4. Disable all startup items.
  5. Restart your PC and test the "R" key.

If it works now, a third-party app might be interfering.

Step 3: External Keyboard Test

Connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and test the "R" key.

  • If it works on the external keyboard, the issue is isolated to the laptop’s built-in keyboard.

Step 4: Consider a Repair or Replacement

If the key fails in UEFI diagnostics and external keyboards work fine, the built-in keyboard may need servicing.

Since you're not comfortable opening the laptop further, I recommend visiting the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
