Hi @bearr97,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Based on your description, the touchpad works normally at the Windows sign-in screen and only becomes slow after the desktop loads. Since the issue persists even after a Windows reset and the touchpad functions correctly before Windows fully loads, this does not immediately point to a hardware problem. It could be related to the touchpad driver, a background application, or a Windows setting that takes effect after sign-in.

Please try the following steps:

1. Adjust Touchpad Settings:

  • Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  • Go to Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  • Increase the Cursor speed slider.
  • Under Taps, set Touchpad sensitivity to High.

2. Reinstall the Touchpad Driver:

  • Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  • Right-click the touchpad device (such as Synaptics, ELAN, or HID-compliant touchpad) and select Uninstall device.
  • Restart the notebook and allow Windows to reinstall the driver automatically.

3. Install the Latest HP Drivers:

  • Visit the Official HP® Support and install the latest:
    • Touchpad driver
    • Chipset driver
    • BIOS update (if available for your model)

4. Test in a Clean Boot Environment

Since the touchpad works normally before the desktop loads, a startup application may be affecting performance.

  • Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  • On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  • Open Task Manager and disable all startup items.
  • Restart the PC and check whether the touchpad responsiveness improves.

5. Check for Power Management Settings

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Locate the touchpad device and open Properties.
  • If a Power Management tab is available, uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Please let us know whether the touchpad is slow immediately after sign-in or only after specific applications load. Also, let us know if the issue occurs while running on both battery power and AC power.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day!

I completed all the troubleshooting steps:
Windows reset
Clean boot
Reinstalled the ELAN touchpad driver
There is no Power Management tab for the ELAN device
The touchpad works normally before Windows loads the desktop, but becomes slow immediately after the desktop appears. The issue still persists. What is the next step?

Thank you for sharing the details.

To test your HP laptop touchpad using UEFI diagnostics, shut down your laptop completely and press the F2 key repeatedly right after powering it back on. This bypasses the Windows operating system to test the hardware directly, isolating whether your issue is software- or hardware-related.

Follow these step-by-step instructions to perform the test:

Boot into HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI:

Hold down the Power button for at least five seconds to completely turn off the computer.

  • Press the Power button to turn the laptop back on.
  • Immediately press the Esc key or the F2 key repeatedly (about once every second) until the diagnostic menu opens.
  • If you pressed Esc, a Startup Menu will appear; press F2 on your keyboard to launch the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI

Kindly share the test result with us.

Hi,

Since the touchpad works smoothly on the Windows sign-in screen but becomes slow after the desktop loads, it does sound less like a hardware failure and more like a software, driver, or background process issue.

A few things you can try:

  • Open Task Manager and check if any process is consuming high CPU, RAM, or Disk usage after signing in.

  • Reinstall the latest Touchpad (Synaptics/ELAN/Precision) driver from the HP Support page for your exact model instead of relying only on Windows Update.

  • Install the latest Chipset and Intel Serial IO drivers as they can also affect touchpad performance.

  • Try performing a Clean Boot to see if a third-party application is causing the slowdown.

  • If the touchpad works normally in Safe Mode, that further indicates a software or driver conflict rather than a hardware issue.

Please let us know:

  • Does the problem start immediately after the desktop appears, or only after a few minutes?

  • Is the cursor lagging all the time or only while applications are loading?

These details will help narrow down the cause.

It looks like an OS issue.

Kindly check if Windows is up to date.
