One of my fans has some play in the bearing; I’ve checked it against the other one, and this play is causing the fan to make an excessive amount of noise. Because of this, I’ve disconnected the fan2 connector. It still works when I plug it back in, but the noise persists. Would it be a problem if I continued to use the computer for office work (Canva, light Premiere Pro use) without fan2?

Hi @vfa1008

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how unsettling it can be to hear excessive noise from a cooling fan, especially after you’ve already taken the time to check both fans and even disconnect one to test.

Thank you for sharing the details—it helps clarify the situation. Let’s go through this carefully.

Impact of Running Without Fan2

  • The Victus 15 fa1008nt is designed with dual fans to balance cooling between CPU and GPU. Disconnecting one fan reduces airflow and can cause higher internal temperatures, even during lighter workloads.
  • For office tasks like Canva or light video editing, the system may appear stable at first, but prolonged use without balanced cooling can lead to thermal throttling or unexpected shutdowns.
  • Heat buildup over time can shorten the lifespan of components such as the GPU, CPU, and VRMs.

Steps You Can Take

Reconnect Fan2
Even if noisy, keeping both fans connected ensures proper cooling. Noise is inconvenient, but overheating can cause lasting damage.

Monitor Temperatures

  • Use the HP App or OMEN Gaming Hub to check system vitals.
  • Keep CPU and GPU temperatures below 85°C during load. If they rise higher with one fan disconnected, reconnecting is essential.

Clean and Inspect

  • Dust buildup can worsen noise and imbalance. Use compressed air to gently clean the fan blades and vents.
  • Ensure the laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface with clear airflow.

Update BIOS and Thermal Controls

Use Balanced Performance Mode

  • In OMEN Gaming Hub, set performance to Balanced or Default.
  • This reduces fan speed spikes compared to Performance mode.

It is not advisable to continue using the laptop with Fan2 disconnected, even for lighter workloads. The cooling system relies on both fans working together, and disabling one risks overheating. Keeping Fan2 connected, monitoring temperatures, and adjusting performance settings will help you continue working safely until you decide on a long-term solution.
