Product: HP Chromebook 14

I have a Nikon D3100 and a Chromebook 14. I read some of the articles regarding this but they didn't answer my question.  The SD card from my Nikon is too large to fit into my Chromebook, so I bought a USB cord. But, the Chromebook doesn't do anything once I plug in the cord connected to the camera into the laptop. Please help!
