Hi @Maggiedog

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

What is the exact model of the HP printer you are using?

Refer to this document to know how to find the Product Name or Product Number.

Any HP printer with 5 ink cartridges will have 1 regular black ink cartridge and 1 photo black ink cartridge. To print in black or color, the printer requires to have all the ink cartridges to be installed with a minimum amount of ink in it.

While printing documents, the printer automatically chooses the regular black ink cartridge to print with. it may use some of the ink from photo black and color ink cartridges to balance the use of ink and to provide a better print quality. This is as per the design.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
