HP hard drive failure

Hi, 

This  is a long shot but I need to try. Tried switching my laptop on today and it went into repairing mode - blank screen and nothing after. 

Ive gone into diagnostic mode and ended up getting a short DST (or something like that) hard drive failure with the ID GGD8RS-73V9AQ-MFPV61-60TR03.

I have no idea what this means and what to do next. I am really worried I have lost all my data. 

Is is there any one who can help??

Hi:

The code you received, Hard Disk 1 Quick Test Failure, means the hard drive has failed, needs to be replaced and the operating system reinstalled.

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.   The hard drive R & R procedures can be found in chapter 5.

After you replace the hard drive you can reinstall W10 for free as follows...

To reinstall W10...Use the Media Creation Tool.  Make the 64 bit installation media.

You can make a W10 USB flash drive installer using an 8 GB flash drive using another Windows PC, since your PC is not working.

If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, select the 'I don't have a product key' option and W10 will install and automatically activate once you are connected to the internet.

Here are the steps to create the W10 USB flash drive installer...

1. Select Download tool now, and select Run.
2. If you agree to the license terms, select Accept.
3. On the What do you want to do? page, select Create installation media for another PC, and then select Next.

4. Select the language, edition, and architecture (64-bit or 32-bit) for Windows 10. You want 64 bit.

5. Select which media you want to use:
6. USB flash drive.  Plug in a blank USB flash drive with at least 8GB of space. Any content on the flash drive will be deleted.

After W10 installs, you can install the drivers and available software from your PC's support page.

After you replace the hard drive, you can buy a USB to SATA HDD adapter cable, plug it into your notebook and see if you can read any files on the dead hard drive.

 I will give it a go assuming I can get a new hard drive soon.  I’ve never done it before but hopefully won’t be too hard.

You're very welcome.

It doesn't look too difficult to get to where the HDD is located on your model.

If you don't need a lot of drive space, you may want to consider replacing the hard drive with a better performing, more reliable solid state drive (SSD).

You can get a 240 GB one pretty inexpensively...I have this model in a couple of my HP desktop and notebook PC's.

Isn’t SSD more like an external disc?

I am having difficulty finding a replacement hard drive for my laptop. Without I cannot do anything.

are you absolutely sure that replacement is the only option?

Sorry for so many questions but I am a dummy in this field!

The link I posted to the Sandisk solid state drive is a direct internal swap for the one that died on you.

If you want the same type drive as you have in there now, this would be an equivalent replacement.

I don't know what else you can do if the hard drive isn't working other than to replace it.

That's what the failure code is telling you to do.

Hi Paul, 

Just to give you an update...

I have successfully managed to remove and replace HDD and also reinstall Windows 10. 

My old HDD is recognised in the file explorer but unfortunately I’m unable to get into it. Just wondering if there is a specific user friendly software that I could use to access the files? 

Otherwise, I might have to pass it onto experts.

Glad you are back up and running.

I found this link regarding how to read data off a drive in an adapter, and unfortunately, it is telling us if you can't open the file folder, the drive is damaged.

You may want to search some more and see if there are any other tips and tricks out there.

Otherwise you will probably have to take it to a shop (and be prepared to pay a lot of money for the recovery service).
