HP Pavilion - 15-au113tx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

whenever i start my PC, some of the keys acts in a weird manner, such as pressing R results in run command, pressing D takes me to desktop without clicking the windows button. This is very much irritating for me. Also when my computer connects to internet, it automatically opens microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=528882 many times, and if my PC is offline it automatically opens the tips page many times. I don't know what is happening with my system, but it happens with many of the users, so far i know till date. Let me know what should i do?

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand, your keyboard is responding incorrectly,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

When was the last time it worked fine?

Were there any hardware/software changes made?

Does your notebook freezes?

Have you tried connecting an external keyboard to check the functionality?

Let's try these steps to resolve the issue:

Perform a Hard reset: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01684768

Test your keyboard in BIOS environment

If your keyboard is not working:

  1. Shut down the computer and restart.
  2. Press the Esc key repeatedly to see if a startup menu opens.
    • If a setup menu does not open, the integrated keyboard hardware is not working. The integrated keyboard in the notebook should be serviced or replaced. To continue using the notebook PC, connect a USB-wired keyboard to a USB port and restart the computer. Contact HP Customer Support for further assistance.

    • If a setup menu opens, use the arrow keys to navigate the menus. If these keys are working in the startup menu, but then fail when Windows loads, the problems are probably occurring in Windows.

After pressing the Esc key, did the startup menu open correctly?

  • Select Yes, if you were able to open the startup menu and use the arrow keys to navigate the menus. This means your keyboard hardware is works, but there might be an issue in Windows.
  • Select No, if you were not able to open the startup menu. This means the keyboard hardware is not working. The keyboard may need to be serviced or replaced. Try an external keyboard if available (for notebooks).

Restart your computer and test the keyboard

  1. Restart the computer.
  2. After the computer has restarted, test to see if your keyboard is working properly now. If the keyboard is still not working, proceed to the next steps.

Uninstall and reinstall keyboard device in Device Manager

If your keyboard is not working:

  1. Turn off the computer and then restart it.
  2. Press the Esc key repeatedly to see if a startup menu opens.
    • If a setup menu does not open, the integrated keyboard hardware is not working. The integrated keyboard in the notebook should be serviced or replaced. To continue using the notebook, connect a USB-wired keyboard to a USB port and restart the computer.
    • If a setup menu opens, use the arrow keys to navigate the menus. If these keys are working in the startup menu, but then fail when Windows loads, the problems might be related to the keyboard software.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. In Device Manager, uninstall and reinstall the keyboard software:
    1. In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
    2. Click View and select Show Hidden Devices.

      Figure: Show hidden devices

    3. Click the arrow next to Keyboards, right-click the keyboard device name, then select Uninstall to remove the device from Windows.
    4. Continue removing device names in the Keyboards category until all device names have been uninstalled.
  5. Restart the notebook. Right-click Start (), select Shut down or sign out, then select Restart.
  6. Wait for the computer to restart and open Windows.

Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI Quick System Test for keyboard

HP provides diagnostic software you can use to test hardware components on your computer and confirm hardware failures when you suspect something is wrong. Use HP PC Diagnostics UEFI as the preferred method for testing hardware.

NOTE: HP occasionally makes updates to its HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) environment. To download the latest version, go to the HP Hardware Diagnostics (in English) website.

Run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) to run tests on the computer's main components:

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second until the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu displays.
  3. From the main menu, run hardware tests and view the test logs, change the language, access system information, check the UEFI version number, and find the address for the UEFI website.

  4. Select Component Tests.
  5. Select Keyboard, select Run once, and then follow the on-screen instructions. The keyboard test is a interactive functional test of the keyboard that takes about three minutes.

NOTE: If you need to end a test before it is complete, press the Escape key (esc).

    Figure: Component Tests options

  6. If the component fails a test, write down the information so you have it available when you contact HP Customer Support. The information is also available in the Test Logs on the main menu.

Test your HP notebook with an external keyboard

If you have another keyboard available, please connect the keyboard to your notebook. Open a program such as Notepad and type some test characters.

  • If the external keyboard shows the same problem as the notebook keyboard, click No.

  • If the external keyboard works fine, there might be a hardware issues with your notebook. Click Yes for information to contact HP Support.

Let me know how this goes,

Cheers 🙂
