Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Have had this printer for years. Over the last couple weeks I have noticed that often only the first few pages of a document will print properly. Later pages will have only part of the text, or perhaps only one color of a graphic. Generally, there will be at most one page with only part of the text, the following pages will all have no text.

The problem occurs nearly every time with a document that is more than three pages long and has graphics. Often times, the document will print correctly in grey scale. Usually can correctly print one page of a document at a time, however, if there is no or little gap in time between the sending of the one-page documents, the problem will reappear. (Looks like you have to actually wait for the printer to finish printing one document before you can send the next.)

Is this something that can be easily (i.e. inexpensively) fixed?

Thanks,

You can fix it yourself but you will have to do a google search for the service manuals so you can remove the top cover to access the carousel brake solenoid which had a pad to dampen the noise but it has worn down so only glue is left and the arm that control the carousel movement sticks and the carousel goes past where it is supposed to. Below is a link for the clj2500 which has the same engine so once you remove the top cover all items will be the same. You will need to put down a new pad after cleaning off the glue reside.

Thanks so much for the information.

I finally had a relatively free afternoon and took the printer apart enough to get at the pad. (We've been using it as a b/w only printer.) The pad is definitely deteriorated. Not sticky, but disintegrating from age, I'd say.

So, can I replace it with just any old felt pad or do I need to get a particular one from HP?

Again, Many Thanks!

So, for those who might be facing the same situation, here is a link to a copy of the manual which you can use to get the top cover assembly off, which will allow you to get to the solenoid with the felt pad that needs replacing.

Also, if you follow the link from the youtube video in the first reply, you'll find some more discussion of the situation.

In summary, to answer my own question, looks like people are using whatever they have, even electrical tape, to replace the deteirorated felt pad. I got a sheet of thin self sticking felt from a craft store and used that.

I am awaiting a drum to test my repair. I'll update when that comes in.

IT WORKS!!!

Drum came in today, I put it in, and the printer works and prints colors and b/w all correctly.

It really wasn't too very hard. It looks intimidating, but if you follow the manual instructions carefully, it's not hard.

Many many thanks to davidzuts who responded to my question and to those people who blogged about the problem elsewhere and the guy who posted the youtube video.
