HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

Dear HP Support Team,

I am writing regarding a persistent hardware issue with my HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw.

Problem Summary

  • Recently, the printer began displaying Error 59.C0 (Developer Motor Rotation Error) when attempting to print.

  • Initially, the error occurred after feeding only ~2 cm of paper.

  • I replaced the black toner with a new, genuine HP black cartridge, but the same error now appears immediately on startup, even without any cartridges installed.

Troubleshooting Already Attempted

  • Removed and re-installed all toner cartridges one by one.

  • Cleaned internal rollers, paper path, and sensors (including pickup rollers).

  • Confirmed the error persists even with no cartridge in place.

  • The issue now occurs at power-on before any printing begins.

Printer Details

  • Model: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw

  • Age: ~8 years old

  • Usage: Well preserved, occasional home use

Questions / Support Needed

  1. Based on the above, is this issue repairable, and what component is likely failing (e.g., motor, encoder, main logic board, sensor)?

  2. Is this covered under any HP warranty or service program, given the age of the printer?

  3. Could you please recommend an authorized HP service center or reliable repair shop in Jerusalem, Israel that can diagnose and repair this issue?

  4. From your professional perspective, would you suggest repairing the printer or replacing it with a new model, considering its age and typical cost of repairs?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Kind regards,

Hadar

I understand your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw is showing a 59.C0 (Developer Motor Rotation Error) even at startup, and you’ve tried troubleshooting with no success. Let’s go through some steps and considerations to understand the issue.

Understand the 59.C0 error
– This error indicates a developer motor malfunction, which is responsible for moving toner to the drum.
– Since it occurs even with no cartridges installed, it points to a mechanical or sensor failure rather than the toner itself.

Check for obvious obstructions or debris
– Remove all toner cartridges, paper trays, and covers.
– Inspect the developer motor area and surrounding gears for dust, paper debris, or broken parts. Even a small obstruction can trigger this error.

Reset the printer firmware
– Turn off the printer, unplug it for 10 minutes, then plug it back in.
– Power on while holding the Cancel or Resume button (if available) to force a reset.
– Note: This rarely fixes hardware-level 59.C0 errors but is worth trying before service.

Check internal connections
– If you’re comfortable opening the printer, check that all motor and sensor cables are seated correctly.
– Loose or corroded connections can trigger a motor rotation error.

Likely failing components
Developer motor or gear assembly – primary suspect for this error.
Main logic board or encoder sensor – secondary suspect if motor appears functional but error persists.
– Given the printer is ~8 years old, the motor assembly is likely worn or stuck.

I hope this helps.
