Today my wife noticed our printer, out of the blue was making a bunch of noise. She turned it off. When I got home and turned it on it tried to "Initialize" and then showed 79 Service Error - Turn off then on.
I found a post on this forum that suggested this could be caused by a "corrupted print" and try turning off the router and then turning the printer back on.
This got rid of the error, until I booted the router up again at which point, the error returned a few minutes later.
I disabled WiFi on the printer and manually connected my laptop to the printer to print a mailing label and it worked fine.
So I suspect there is a "job" on some device on my network that keeps trying to print and crashes the printer. We haven't used the printer in a few days so I don't know why this would happen suddenly today out of the blue unless someone outside our family has hacked into the network/printer.
Thoughts? Any suggestions on how to diagnose this issue and track down the culprit?

This is a very common error. You can see many today. Please try

That solution doesn't work. We received a notification on the printer to upgrade the software/firmware, did the upgrade, and now the printer just keeps turning on, connecting to the WiFi, giving us a 79 service error, and restarting over and over and over. I can't get it to stay on long enough to upgrade or downgrade anything.
And the link on the page you link to for updating the firmware goes to an Opps! We can't find that page, but here's the good news - we've got other ways to find what you need.

I've got the exact same error after the last firmware upgrade. As soon as the printer have Internet connection it gives the 79 error. If the WiFi is disconnected or no network cable attached there are no problems. But as soon as I plug in a cable or connect to WiFI, after a minute or two it gives the error and restarts until I disconnect from WiFi or removes the cable.
I've tried this:
1. Remove all jobs in printer queues on all computers - no difference
2. Shut down all computer on the local network - no difference
3. Remove printer from all computers - no difference
4. Changed IP of the printer - no difference
5. Reset all settings on the printer - no difference
What else to try?

This solution, suggested by HP staff by phone, did the trick. At least it seems like that for the moment. Note that this may ERASE some important settings since it is a factory reset.
1. Shut down the printer and remove network cable
2. Start the printer, and as soon as the white bar at the bottom appears, press and hold your finger on it until a reset text appears (30 seconds or so). This will reset the printer (not the firmware though)
3. Go through the setup process
4. Plug in the cable (or connect to WiFi)
5. Done!
I'll write here again if the error re-appears.

Thanks, that gives me hope. I was seeing the exact same symptoms you described. As soon as it connected to internet it got the error so I've disabled wifi and have been scanning to usb and printing directly from a usb connected laptop.
I'll give the reset a try and report back.

I also tried physically connecting it to my router with an ethernet cable and got the 79 Service error again.
This is extremely troublesome as I really need to be able to access this printer over the network. Is it even possible to update the firmware without being connected to the network?
I spent a lot of money for this printer as I was tired of constantly having to buy ink and because the cheap inkjet printers had such a short lifespan.
I rarely use the printer, I've probably printed less than 1000 pages on it and of course this happens right after the warranty expired. 😞

Yes, you can upgrade the firmware by USB connection. You must download the firmware from here https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/printers
It's a special software you must download and run. The software is for Windows and macOS but the Windows version works fine in Wine, if you're using Linux as me.
For me, re-installing the firmware didn't work though. 😞
