83X and 83A

Good afternoon. I bought an HP 83X from Staples thinking it is the high yield version of 83A. However, when I opened the box and tried to put it in, the HP 83X does not fit on my MFP M127fn. I went back to Staples and explained my situation to the customer service man. He says I am not able to exchange it for an 83A because it has been opened even though it is unused. He says HP the manufacturer is able to exchange it for me if I contact them. 

Is HP able to exchange the item for me? The 83X is unused. I just want the 83A for my printer to work. Thank you for your response in advance.
