Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277
Linux

My postins seem to have disappeared lately, so once more...

I've been trying to add the printer as a network printer in Linux Mint (17.3) by name instead of by IP address, and some questions have arisen.

1) What are the two devices whose MAC address I keep seeing in my DHCP server? One doesn't seem to respond and the other has 7 services.

2) The hplip (3.17.11) doesn't work. It finds no printers even if the "system-config-printer" works (if I give it the IP address - it still can't find printers, but printing works). How can I find out what's wrong?

3) Is it possible to add the printer by name? The DHCP server gives the name "NPIB88B68". Is it the host name or print queue name? That is, what should I use as a URI?

Funny, the hplip started working apparently by itself!

So question 2) became obsolete.

Anyone? (Questions 1 and/or 3.)

Another funny thing: If I check the status or supplies via the GUI, I get
"Status information not available for this device"
and
"Supplies information not available for this device"

If I open its IP (the one with "active" MAC address) with a web browser, I can see it all, and CUPS prints fine.

And:

Current contents of '/etc/hp/hplip.conf' file:
# hplip.conf.  Generated from hplip.conf.in by configure.

The mystery of two interfaces is solved.

The non-responsive entry was my cellphone, to which my router gave the same name as my printer has.

Don't know why.

So only the question about addíng a printer by name instead of IP number still remains.
