When Tray 2 runs out of paper, the printer stops - doesn't auto switch to Tray 3 to finish print job.  If I specify "Tray 3" the printer will print from Tray 3, but won't switch from 2 to 3 automatically to finish a job.  How can I get this to happen?

You need to make sure that:

  • The printer is configured (via the front panel menu system, or Embedded Web Server equivalent) such that both trays are known to contain the same paper size (e.g. A4 or Letter) and paper type (e.g. Plain or Letterhead).

  • On the workstation, the print jobs specify the matching paper size and paper type, and set the paper source to "printer auto-select".

OK... Tray 1 is set to Any type, as it is a manual-feed function...

Trays 2 & 3 are set as you suggest:  plain / letter

What about the "Paper Out Action" setting?  Does this matter?  It was set to "wait forever" - is this allowing for Tray 2 to run out and auto-switch to Tray 3 before "waiting forever?"

Thanks!

I can't answer your subsidiary questions about tray 1, sorry.

Quite a few options regarding the multi-use tray tend to vary from printer model to model, so you'd have to refer to the User Guide manual for your printer model for advice - or just try things out.

Why not set the size and type for tray 1 to something other than Any - for example Executive and Letterhead.

There may also be options regarding treating tray1 "first" (which I think implies that it will always be considered first if it is open and loaded) or "cassette mode" (which means that the size and type values are considered as part of the paper source selection algorithm, in the same way as the other trays).
