I have an old HP printer hooked up to my computer with Windows 10 that prints just fine. I'm getting a new computer and don't want to have a parallel port put in so I tried to print using a 1284 USB to parallel cable for bi-directional printing just to make sure it would work with usb instead of the parallel port. It wouldn't work and doesn't seem to recognize the cable or printer or something. Then I noticed that this cable says it's compatible with older Windows versions but doesn't list Windows 10; apparently it's an older cable before Windows 10 was available. Is that my problem? Also, when I tried to download the driver, it didn't install. I didn't get a message or anything that there was a problem, it just downloaded the driver and then nothing when I tried to install it. Again, I'm thinking that might be because of the cable? Or is the HP 2300 so old that it lacks something that would make the USB to parallel unusable? Does anyone know anything that might help? Thanks!

Thank you, but I can't find a USB port anywhere. The manual shows that it has a USB port although the diagram it shows looks more like a square than a USB port. The diagram shows it to be right below the parallel port, and there does seem to be a squarish port of some sort, but not USB, at least not USB as I know it. I bought this printer used and in looking at it compared to the diagram, I think it's possible that some things have been removed. Thank you for your help.
