Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

hey I just need to clarify I was told that a usb to ethernet adapter could be used to set up a printer like inkjet or laser in a network of computers. I am not sure if this is true as other people  are telling me that it won't work. I know using a print server will work or print sharing will work although print sharing means that one computer needs to be on. I know also that wireless and ethernet will work but you have to choice either wifi or ethernet cable but what about usb to ethernet adapter for a laser or inkjet printer?

Of course, HP's own are called Jet Direct adapters but there are USB to Network print servers avaialble from many vendors. You simply connect the adapter to the printer and the network and usually there is a utility you run on  network attached PC to find the adapter and ensure it is programmed to your network. Once that is done,  you can either use that utility and run it on any computer on the network you want to print from, or simply setup a printer on each workstation. To do this, on the computer, go to control panel and find the devices and pritners app. Click add printer, local printer, add new port, Standard TCP/IP port and use the IP address assigned to the network adapter as the port address. Then when prompted for driver, select the correct driver. If Windows does not have the driver then I suggest you download the HP Universal Print Driver if compatible or the dedicated driver for your printer and use that driver.

Thanks for the reply my question was not about print servers that go from usb to ethernet. I mean just buying any usb to ethernet adapter like this one.

Would that allow you to set up ethernet network printing or is the answer no? It has to a print server.
