HP M477 FDW
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to connect to a HP M477 FDW using Wi-Fi Direct.

WiFi direct is turned on, and I can see a WiFi connection .

When I first connect to this network I am asked for a security key, which we can lookup on the printer itself.

The connection will then proceed but will only connect intermittently. (say 1 in 4 times I try to connect it will succeed.)

When I am able to connect, I have tried accessing the EWS using the WIFI IP address - but the connection will always disconnect before anything happens, or just doesnt load.

The PC is also connected to an Ethernet network at the same time (for Internet/network access).
The Printer is connected to the same Ethernet network, but we can never 'see' the printer over the Ethernet network.

It looks like the WIFI Direct connection never assigns an IP to the PC when it connects hence it drops the connection fairly rapidly.

Any ideas?

Since you are already connected to your network via Ethernet, there is no need for Wireless Direct.  It should be disabled in the printer.

Wireless Direct is only used if there is no router available.

We need to use the WIFI Direct becuase the printer is not viisible over the Ethernet connection (the Ethernet network is an office-managed system - we have no control over it)

If I disable the Ethernet (unplug it!) should the WIFI Direct then work correctly?

HP Recommended

So you do not have a wireless network in your office is that correct?

In this case, yes Wireless Direct should work with the Ethernet wired connection also.

Well the problem we're having is that the WIFI Direct still doesn't work!

It will only connect intermittently - and when it does connect I can't connect to the web control panel (i've looked up the IP address of the printer on WIFI direct) - and the connection then drops again anyway.

We know the WIFI security key is correct (if we enter it wrong then we get an immeidate error, but enter it correctly, then it trys to connect but as mentioned above it is only successful intermittently, and for a very short time.

You can try resetting the printer back to Factory/Network defaults and try again.  If you still have problems, suggest you contact HP support now.
