Most of the time, after hours/days/week since last power cycle, my LaserJet Pro MFP M477fdn refuses to wake up and print. It does not respond to pings.
Printer is connected via cat 5e cable and WiFi is turned off.
There's no rhyme or reason that I can figure out. Sometimes it happens after printing with no problems for weeks at a time, other times 2 or 3 hours after I've had to restart it.
The only way to get it reconnected to the network is to powercycle. Disconnecting the ethernet cable and reconnecting does not do it. Resetting the tcp/ip settings, doesn't do it.
The device is on the latest firmware... There hasn't been an update in a couple of years.... Always checking bc it also fails to print most PDF's unless I set it to print as an image. But that's not what I'm writing about today.
This is becoming a real issue. People will send documents to the printer that never print.. and I have no idea until weeks later when I receive an angry phone call that I didn't take care of whatever was on those documents.
Thank you,
M

Does it respond to the control panel when it will not print? If you are using a Windows based computer (you do not share that info which makes diagnosis less precise) then it is possible that Windows has configured the printer driver with a WSD port for communication. This port type is notorious for dropping printers and not finding them again until a power cycle. We normally recommend that the printer driver be configured to use a Standard TCP/IP port.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I only have Chromebooks at the moment, so no Windows machines. I have two connections to the printer. One is via Google Cloud Print, the other is via local IP. But I don't believe this is a computer issue as Google Cloud Print cannot connect either.
When the printer loses it's network connection, it fails to respond to pings... Yet when I look at the control panel screen, it's still showing it's proper dhcp assigned IP.
To answer your question, yes the control panel works.. I can print reports like settings, etc, from the control panel.
The web interface for the printer though, does not open... which is no surprise since it's network connection is no longer active.
Let me know if there's other information you need to help determine the problem.
Thanks,
Marc
