Trying to change the Hostname on an HP 400 printer. Typing in new hostname and choosing apply returns the original default hostname. Unable to change the hostname source from default to manual.

This was solved by installing the latest printer driver on my laptop and then logging into the printer via its web IP address. The old driver allows the change but but does not allow the source of the HostName to be changed from default to manual. Thus, when clicking on accept, the default hostname reapears. The latest printer driver "HP Laserjet 400 m401 Pcl 6" installed on my laptop allows the change to be made.

I have a similar problem at the library where I work. We have a wireless printer that is used by a small group of users.
However it is frequently printed to by others, rather than the printer in the main library used by all.
How can I change the "default host name" on the HP CF45A Office Jet, currently NPI5087A4 to something more descriptive as to its purpose. Presently when I log into the printer via its IP address, choose Networking, Network Identification, Network Identification, Current settings and try and change the HostName; as soon as I click on OK it changes back.
Asking each user to make changes to their laptop, notepad, or other device settings of course isn't feasable.

I had the same problem.
Then I downloaded the latest driver and changed it on the printer que.
I tried to change it inside from Print Management in Server 2012r2 and from printer Web Page.
No changes....
Next step was to type the ip from Chrome.
Then i was able to change the hostname.
That was the solution for me.

Thanks for Erik_Aa,
I have installed the latest firmware on the HP CF485A (all in one laser printer) which didn't change the behavior.
I wouldn't think that changing the printer driver would make a difference since logging in to the printer via its IP addresss with Explorer wouldn't invole the printer drive. Just to be sure I did choose another printer driver from the web (HP Laserjet Pro MFP M225-M226 PCL 6) and the behavior also remained the same with the default Host Name changing back as soon as I clicked on the accept button.
The suggestion by many that the user should just change the name on their own computers doesn't solve the library's problem since many one time users come in off the street to print for example a bus ticket, or a resume and then can't find the printer, and of course then don't want to change the name of a printer that they don't want to use.
