Hi @Maree82,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw shows an Engine Communication Error, especially after you've already tried updating the software. Let's walk through the most accurate steps to help you resolve this issue.

⚠️ What Does “Engine Communication Error” Mean?

This error typically indicates a timeout or failure in communication between the printer’s formatter board and the engine controller. It can be caused by firmware issues, power fluctuations, or internal hardware faults.

Recommended Steps to Fix It

1. Perform a Full Power Reset

Sometimes, a simple reset can clear internal communication faults.

  • Turn off the printer using the power switch.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 30 seconds.
  • Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on and wait for it to initialize.

If the error persists, continue to the next step.

2. Update the Firmware

Even if you’ve installed new software, the firmware may still be outdated or corrupted.

Make sure the printer is connected directly to your PC and powered on during the update.

3. Check for Hardware Issues

If the error continues after firmware updates and resets:

  • Inspect internal connections (if you're comfortable opening the printer).
  • Check for loose cables between the formatter board and engine controller.
  • If under warranty, contact HP Support for service or replacement.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
