HP LaserJet Pro P1606dn Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

In another thread I just followed the advice of OPS3pidemic2025, right clicking on the driver under Printers & Scanners; and it wiped out all my printer drivers.  I was trying to troubleshoot a connection problem with the Pro Laserjet; and it caused problems where there weren't any.  For once and for all, with this laser printer connect to a Mac Monterey?  The manuals say "no."

I am satisfied that for this OS I succeeded connecting my LaserJet.  However, you all bat 1000% answering posts, as I should have guessed by experience.  This just adds to the number of posts I made to this community.

Hi @tightpurchaser

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you have been facing issues with Mac Monterey Operating System with your printer drivers. Unfortunately, removing drivers unintentionally can sometimes occur during troubleshooting.

I would request you to please follow the steps:

Driver issues: Right‑clicking and removing drivers under Printers & Scanners can indeed wipe out all installed printer drivers. On macOS, the safest way to troubleshoot is:

  1. Remove the printer from System Preferences → Printers & Scanners.

  2. Re‑add it using the “+” button. macOS will automatically install the correct driver or use AirPrint.

  3. If needed, download HP APP, which can fetch the latest drivers compatible with Monterey.

AirPrint

Remove the Printer (if still listed)

  • Open System Preferences → Printers & Scanners.

  • Select your LaserJet in the left panel.

  • Click the – (minus) button to remove it.

Add the Printer Again

  • In Printers & Scanners, click the + (plus) button.

  • Wait while macOS searches for available printers.

  • Your LaserJet should appear automatically if it’s on the same Wi‑Fi network or connected via USB.

Select AirPrint

  • When the printer appears, click it.

  • In the Use: dropdown, choose AirPrint (Apple’s built‑in driver system).

  • Click Add to finish.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Pallipurath, I don't know what happened to my earlier post; but I am satisfied that I have the LaserJet installed on my Mac Monterey with a Universal Driver for that series, though I am not familiar with AirPrint.  On both Windows 11 and Mac, the URL does not open.  Since my network devices have locations beginning 192.168.1._, I thought I could assign a new address within that range.  The HP app on the Mac added the LaserJet with a few diagnostics, but no luck doing that on the Windows 11.  Another user on another one of my posts said that the app may not allow that on Windows 11.  Do you know any way of changing the IP address?  Thanks for responding.

Hi @tightpurchaser

Thank you for responding.

Yes, you can Change the IP Address of Your HP LaserJet Printer on Windows 11 and macOS, here are the steps to perform.

For macOS:

  • Network Settings:
  • Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
  • Select Network.
  • Adjust IP Manually:
  • Choose the network connection type (Ethernet or Wi-Fi) from the list.
  • Click Advanced, and navigate to the TCP/IP tab.
  • Set Configure IPv4 to Manually and enter the new IP address.
  • Click OK, then Apply.

Use Embedded Web Server:

  • Launch a web browser and enter your printer’s IP address.
  • Click the Networking tab, select TCP/IP settings.
  • Update the IP address and subnet mask manually.
  • Click Apply.

Please note:

Print a Configuration Page:

This can be done by navigating through your printer's control panel. It will list the current IP address.

Reboot the Printer:

Sometimes a restart is required for changes to take effect.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Pallipurath, Thank you for getting back.  Even though I can use the LaserJet, on both my Windows 11 and Mac Monterey I would like to have functionality through a web page.  I assume that it is easier to do this on Mac Monterey than on Windows 11.  Through a Universal Driver I have access on Windows 11 to ports.  However, instructions say that I must change the gateway and subnet mask.  I am on the Windows 11 now, where connections give me the most trouble.  Later I will switch to the Mac in order to try your suggestions.  Thanks again.

Pallipurath, I went into System Preferences without messing with the drivers.  I could tell what IP address this Mac Monterey is on; but I could not tell which printers had which addresses.  The models of the printers did not appear.  When I looked in Finder to see what printed materials I had on this LaserJet, I found a driver that AirPrint most likely detected during a previous hookup.  Thinking that I had no cartridge, I never used it until now when I saw that it had a smidgen of toner.

I think I should give up on this and be content that I can use the printer in spite of not having web service.  On my newly upgraded Windows 11, I am having the same trouble.  This all takes up too much time getting nowhere.  As for my previous post, I did not intentionally bold the type; so I do not understand why it appears that way.

Hi @tightpurchaser

Thank you for responding.

I understand that the issue is not resolved. As a last resort I would request you to please perform a factory reset and network reset.

Network Reset

  • On the printer’s control panel, press the Setup (gear icon).
  • Navigate to Network Setup → Restore Network Settings.
  • Confirm when prompted.
  • The printer will restart, and all saved Wi‑Fi/Ethernet details will be erased.
  • You’ll need to reconnect it to your router or computer afterward.

Make sure both the device is connected with 2.4 GHz as the old printer will work only 2.4GHz.

Factory Reset.

  • On the printer’s control panel, press the Setup (gear icon).
  • Go to Service → Restore Defaults.
  • Confirm the reset.
  • The printer will restart automatically.
  • This clears all custom settings (network, fax, passwords, preferences).
  • Firmware version stays the same.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Pallipurath, It took me this long to retrieve this post.  I thought I was clear that this model does not have a Control Panel, just push buttons.  Maybe I'll try your method.  However, I am satisfied that it works although I cannot bring it up on a browser page.  There is a method to get this LaserJet reset.  You probably desire that I print out a Configuration page to obtain a new IP address.  However, we have consumed too much time on this.

Hi @tightpurchaser,

Thank you for responding.

I understand that is time consuming. However I would request you to please try the below steps which should resolve the issue.

Printing a Configuration Page

  • Turn on the printer and make sure it is in the Ready state (green light steady).
  • Press and hold the “Go” button (the single button on the printer) for about 5 seconds.
  • The printer will print a Configuration Page.
  • This page shows the current IP address, subnet mask, and other network details.
  • If the IP address is missing or shows 0.0.0.0, the printer may not be connected properly to the network.

Resetting or Configuring the IP Address

Via Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Connect the printer with an Ethernet cable to your router.
  • Use the IP address from the configuration page.
  • Type it into a browser (e.g., http://192.168.1.25).
  • From there, you can manually assign a new IP address.

Using HP Smart Install or Driver Software

  • Install the printer driver/software on your PC.
  • During setup, you’ll be prompted to assign or confirm the IP address.
  • This is useful if the printer isn’t showing up on the network.

 Reset to Factory Defaults

  • Power off the printer.
  • Hold the Go button while powering it back on.
  • Keep holding until all lights flash, then release.
  • This resets the printer, including network settings, so it will request a new IP from your router via DHCP.

Have a good day.
